To Have: бар / жок

Two ways to say 'I have': via locative and possessive

English has the verb to have, but Kyrgyz (like many languages) has no dedicated verb for "to have". Instead of stating ownership directly, we describe whether something exists (бар) or does not exist (жок).

But how do you show whose thing it is? There are two paths: the beginner's path and the native speaker's path.

💡 Method 1: The Beginner's Path (Using the Locative Case)

The simplest way to say "I have" is to use the Locative Case (-да / -де), which translates as "at [someone]" or "on [someone]".

🧮 Formula

Pronoun in locative case + Object + бар / жок

💡 Examples

  • Менде унаа бар. — I have a car. (lit. "At me there is a car.")
  • Сенде убакыт жокпу? — Don't you have time?
  • Анда суроо бар. — He/she has a question. (Ал + да = Анда)
  • Бизде акча жок. — We have no money.

⚠️ Why does this sound unnatural?

You'll be understood 100%, but to Kyrgyz speakers this phrasing sounds a bit "foreign", because you've directly copied the structure found in many European languages (At me = Менде). In authentic Kyrgyz this form is used for something slightly different (more on that below).

💡 Method 2: The Native Speaker's Path (Using Possessive Suffixes)

The truly Kyrgyz way is to express possession. Instead of "At me there is a car", you say: "My-car exists".

To do this, simply attach a Possessive Suffix (-м, -ң, -сы, etc.) to the object. You don't even need to say «Мен» (I)!

🧮 Formula

(Менин) Object + possessive suffix + бар / жок

💡 Examples

  • Унаам бар. — I have a car (lit.: My-car exists).
  • Убактың жокпу? — Don't you have time? (lit.: Your-time not-exists?)
  • Суроосу бар. — He/she has a question (lit.: His-question exists).
  • Акчабыз жок. — We have no money (lit.: Our-money doesn't exist).
  • Ишим бар. — I have things to do (lit.: My-business exists).

💡 This method sounds much more natural, shorter, and better. Aim to use this one!

🧠 A Battle of Nuances: What's the Real Difference?

If both methods are correct, what's the difference? The difference lies in the meaning you're conveying!

1. «Менде бар» — Physical presence right now

When you use Менде (on me / with me), you emphasise that the object is physically with you at this moment (in your pocket, bag, or hand).

PhraseMeaning
Менде акча бар.I have money (on me right now). I can pay for coffee.
Менде ручка жок.I don't have a pen (with me right now).

2. «Акчам бар» — Ownership in general

When you use the possessive form, you're talking about ownership in the broad sense. The object doesn't have to be in your pocket right now — it belongs to you.

PhraseMeaning
Акчам бар.I have money (in general, in life). I'm not broke. (Even if my wallet isn't with me right now.)
Машинам бар.I have a car. (It's parked in the garage, not in my pocket.)

💡 A native speaker's test:

Imagine you're at a restaurant and need to pay, but you left your wallet at home. You'd say: «Акчам бар (I do have money in general), бирок азыр менде жок (but I don't have it with me right now)».

💡 How to Ask a Question?

To ask "Do you have...?", just attach the question particle -бы / -пы at the very end:

  • Унааң барбы? — Do you have a car?
  • Калемиң жокпу? — Don't you have a pen?
  • Силерде суроолор барбы? — Do you (guys) have any questions?
