In English we constantly compare actions or describe feelings using phrases like "as if," "as though," or "it seems like": "He talks as if he knows everything," "She sits there as though she can't hear me," "I feel like I'm coming down with something."
In Kyrgyz, these comparisons use the suffix -гандай. It builds on the similarity suffix -дай/-дей, which you may have already encountered.
🧠 Logic
This construction consists of two familiar parts:
- -ган: turns the verb into a participle (one who has done)
- -дай: the similarity/comparison suffix (like, as). You've probably seen it in words like кандай (what kind / how) or сендей (like you)
Put them together and the phrase «билгендей» literally means: "in the manner of one who knows."
билгендейбилroot "to know"генparticipleдейsimilarity→ as if [someone] knows
🧮 Formula
Verb root + suffix -ган-ген-гон-гөн-кан-кен-кон-көн + similarity ending -дай-дей-дой-дөй
The -ган suffix — chosen according to vowel harmony:
- After voiced consonants and vowels: -ган / -ген / -гон / -гөн
- After voiceless consonants: -кан / -кен / -кон / -көн
The similarity ending — always -дай/-дей/-дой/-дөй, because the participle ends in the voiced -н.
💡 Tip: Unlike -дай with nouns (where you can get -тай/-тей variants), here after -ган/-кан it's always -д-: баргандай, уккандай, көргөндөй.
Negative form
Negation is inserted between the stem and -ган: stem + -ба/-бе/-бо/-бө/-па/-пе + -гандай
| Kyrgyz | Translation |
|---|---|
| укпагандай | as if [someone] can't hear |
| көрбөгөндөй | as though [someone] hadn't seen |
| уктабагандай | as if [someone] hadn't slept |
уктабагандайуктаroot "to sleep"баnegationганparticipleдайsimilarity→ as if [someone] hadn't slept
💡 Examples
This form most often works alongside another action (doing something as if...).
| Verb | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Бил- (to know) | Ал баарын билгендей сүйлөйт. | He talks as if he knows everything. |
| Ук- (to hear) | Мени укпагандай отурат. | She sits there as if she can't hear me. |
| Көр- (to see) | Эч нерсе көрбөгөндөй өтүп кетти. | He walked past as though he hadn't seen anything. |
| Укта- (to sleep) | Түнү менен уктабагандай көрүнөсүң. | You look as though you haven't slept all night. |
"It seems like I..." — feelings with personal endings
If you want to describe your own state (it seems like I've come down with something / I think I forgot), add a personal ending to the -гандай form:
| Example | Translation |
|---|---|
| Мен ооруп калгандаймын. | It seems like I've gotten sick. |
| Биз адашып кеткендейбиз. | It seems like we've gotten lost. |
кеткендейбизкетroot "to leave"кенparticipleдейsimilarityбизwe→ it seems like we (left)
⚠️ Important notes
The main trap: Action vs. Thing
The suffix -ган is added only to verbs, not to nouns:
| Situation | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ACTION (as if [someone] understood / as if [someone] knows) | verb + -гандай | Ал мени түшүнгөндөй баш ийкеди. — He nodded as if he'd understood me. |
| THING or PERSON (like you / like a child) | noun + -дай | Сен жаш баладай сүйлөп жатасың. — You're talking like a child. |
More examples with nouns:
| Word | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Муз (ice) | Бул суу муздай муздак экен. | This water is cold as ice. |
| Сен (you) | Мен сендей болом. | I'll be like you. |
🛑 Never say: Балагандай or Сенгендей. It's either Сүйлөгөндөй (verb) or Баладай (noun)!
