The article on vowel harmony explains how vowels in suffixes harmonize with the vowels of the root. But Kyrgyz has another important rule: consonants must also agree with each other.
This is called consonant assimilation. The rule is simple: voiced attracts voiced, voiceless attracts voiceless.
🧠 Three types of letters
All letters of the Kyrgyz alphabet fall into three groups:
| Type | Letters | Characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| Vowels | а, е, ё, и, о, у, ы, э, ю, я, ө, ү | Produced freely, without obstruction |
| Voiced consonants | б, в, г, д, ж, з, л, м, н, р, й, ң | Produced with vibration of the vocal cords |
| Voiceless consonants | п, ф, к, т, ш, с, х, ц, ч | Produced without vocal cord vibration |
Quick test: Place your hand on your throat and say the letter. If you feel vibration — it's voiced. If you don't — it's voiceless.
🧮 The main rule
The last letter of a word determines which letter the attached suffix starts with:
| Word ends in | Suffix starts with |
|---|---|
| A vowel (а, е, и...) | Voiced or sonorant (Д, Б, Г, Л, Н) |
| A voiced consonant (р, л, н, з...) | Voiced (Д, Б, Г) |
| A voiceless consonant (п, т, к, ш, ч...) | Voiceless (Т, П, К) |
💡 Examples by suffix type
1. Plural: -лар-дар-тар
Three options for the initial consonant:
| Word | Last letter | Type | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| бала (child) | а | vowel | балалар |
| көз (eye) | з | voiced | көздөр |
| доктор (doctor) | р | voiced | докторлор |
| мектеп (school) | п | voiceless | мектептер |
Note: After vowels and the voiced sonorants р, й, the soft sonorant variant -лар is used rather than -дар (e.g. докторлор, үйлөр).
2. Definite past tense: -ды-ты
Two variants: voiced -ды (after vowels and voiced consonants) and voiceless -ты (after voiceless consonants).
| Verb | Last letter | Type | Past tense |
|---|---|---|---|
| бар (to go) | р | voiced | барды |
| кел (to come) | л | voiced | келди |
| ич (to drink) | ч | voiceless | ичти |
| бас (to step) | с | voiceless | басты |
3. Participle / Compound past tense: -ган-кан
The suffix -ган is enormously common in Kyrgyz. It follows the general rule (Г becomes К after voiceless consonants).
| Verb | Last letter | Type | -ган form |
|---|---|---|---|
| оку (to read) | у | vowel | окуган |
| бар (to go) | р | voiced | барган |
| ич (to drink) | ч | voiceless | ичкен |
| кач (to run) | ч | voiceless | качкан |
4. Noun cases
Assimilation applies in all six cases. Here are examples for the most common ones:
Dative case (To whom? Where to?): -га-ка
| Word | Last letter | Type | Dative |
|---|---|---|---|
| бала (child) | а | vowel | балага |
| шаар (city) | р | voiced | шаарга |
| мектеп (school) | п | voiceless | мектепке |
Ablative case (From where? From whom?): -дан-тан
| Word | Last letter | Type | Ablative |
|---|---|---|---|
| бала | а | vowel | баладан |
| шаар | р | voiced | шаардан |
| мектеп | п | voiceless | мектептен |
Genitive case (Of whom? Of what?): -нын-дын-тын
| Word | Last letter | Type | Genitive |
|---|---|---|---|
| бала | а | vowel | баланын |
| шаар | р | voiced | шаардын |
| мектеп | п | voiceless | мектептин |
5. Small particles: Question -бы-пы and Negation -ба-па
These behave exactly the same way: after voiced consonants and vowels use Б, after voiceless consonants use П.
- келдиби? (did he come?) / мектеппи? (is it a school?)
- барба (don't go) / ичпе (don't drink)
❗ Voicing at morpheme boundaries
Sometimes the reverse process occurs: the final consonant of the root itself changes before a suffix.
| Original | Becomes | When |
|---|---|---|
| К | Г | before a suffix vowel |
| П | Б | before a suffix vowel |
This most often happens when we add possessive suffixes (my, your, his/her) to a word.
Examples:
- жүрөк (heart) + үм (my) → жүрөгүм (my heart)
- көйнөк (shirt) + үм → көйнөгүм (my shirt)
- китеп (book) + им (my) → китебим (my book)
This happens because the voiceless consonant finds itself sandwiched between two vowel sounds and "voices" itself for ease of pronunciation.
🧮 Summary table of suffixes
| Suffix | After vowel | After voiced | After voiceless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Past tense | -
| Dative case | -га-ге-го-гө | -га-ге-го-гө | -ка-ке-ко-кө |
| Ablative case | -дан-ден-дон-дөн | -дан-ден-дон-дөн | -тан-тен-тон-төн |
| Genitive case | -нын-нин-нун-нүн | -дын-дин-дун-дүн | -тын-тин-тун-түн |
⚠️ How to remember it easily?
Just memorize three pairs of alternating letters:
| Voiced | Voiceless |
|---|---|
| Д | Т |
| Б | П |
| Г | К |
If you see any suffix that in the dictionary starts with Д, Б, or Г — remember: after a voiceless consonant, that letter immediately transforms into its voiceless twin (Т, П, or К).
