Kyrgyz forms the plural in a very logical and consistent way. You simply take a word and attach the suffix -лар to it.
🧠 Logic
What is the plural for? To show that there is more than one of something when we speak in general, without a specific count: "the students arrived", "the apples are tasty".
But there is an important difference from English: if a number or a quantity word (two, many) already appears before the noun, the plural suffix is NOT used. More on that in the "Important Details" section.
🧮 Formula
According to the rules of vowel harmony and sound assimilation, the suffix -лар adapts so the word sounds natural. There are 12 variants in total: -лар, -лер, -лор, -лөр, -дар, -дер, -дор, -дөр, -тар, -тер, -тор, -төр.
Don't worry! We'll pick the right one in two simple steps.
Step 1: Choose the first letter (Л, Д or Т)
First, look at the last letter of your word. It determines which consonant the suffix begins with.
| If the word ends in... | The suffix starts with... | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| A vowel (а, о, у, и...) or sonorants р, й | ➔ Л | шаар ➔ шаарлар (cities), үй ➔ үйлөр (houses) |
| A voiced consonant (з, л, м, н, ң) | ➔ Д | кыз ➔ кыздар (girls), аял ➔ аялдар (women) |
| A voiceless consonant (к, п, с, т, ч, ш...) | ➔ Т | мектеп ➔ мектептер (schools), китеп ➔ китептер (books) |
Step 2: Choose the vowel (А, Е, О, Ө)
Now look at the last vowel in the root of the word. The plural suffix is "wide-vowel" type, so only 4 vowels are used.
| Last vowel in root | Vowel in suffix | Variants |
|---|---|---|
| А, Я, Ы, У, Ю | ➔ А | -лар / -дар / -тар |
| И, Е, Э | ➔ Е | -лер / -дер / -тер |
| О, Ё | ➔ О | -лор / -дор / -тор |
| Ө, Ү | ➔ Ө | -лөр / -дөр / -төр |
⚠️ The main trap: Watch out for words with the narrow rounded vowels «У» and «Ү». After them the suffix "opens up" and is written with the wide vowels!
- Куш (bird) ➔ Куштар (not
Куштур) - Суу (water) ➔ Суулар
- Күн (day) ➔ Күндөр (not
Күндүр)
💡 Examples
| Word | Plural | Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| бала (child) | балдар | exception! |
| кыз (girl) | кыздар | з = voiced → Д; ы → А |
| үй (house) | үйлөр | й = sonorant → Л; ү → Ө |
| китеп (book) | китептер | п = voiceless → Т; е → Е |
| жол (road) | жолдор | л = voiced → Д; о → О |
| көл (lake) | көлдөр | л = voiced → Д; ө → Ө |
| унаа (car) | унаалар | а = vowel → Л; а → А |
❗ Exception: Children (Бала → Балдар)
Kyrgyz has just one exception that breaks the rules, and it's a word you'll use every single day: бала (child / boy).
By the rule (after a vowel) the suffix should be -лар. You might see балалар in official titles (like балалар бакчасы — kindergarten).
But in everyday spoken language 99% of the time people use балдар (children / guys). The "а" in the root simply drops out and the suffix changes to -дар. Just treat it as its own standalone word!
⚠️ Important Details: When the Suffix Is NOT Needed
In English we say: "one apple", but "two apples" and "five apples" — we always use the plural when there's more than one.
Kyrgyz works differently! If a number or a quantity word (көп — many, аз — few, бир нече — several) already appears before the noun, the plural suffix is NEVER used. The number itself already shows there are multiple items.
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Right | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Эки алма | Two apples | |
| Беш адам | Five people | |
| Көп китеп | Many books | |
| Жүз сом | A hundred soms |
The suffix -лар is only needed when we're talking about items in general, without a specific quantity:
- Алмалар даамдуу. — Apples are tasty.
- Студенттер келишти. — The students arrived.
💡 Tool: The Noun Decliner
Plural is just the beginning! Kyrgyz nouns can take not only plural suffixes but also cases and possessive endings ("my", "your"). Sometimes 3–4 suffixes stack onto one word in a row!
👉 To keep track of all the endings, use the Noun Decliner. Enter any word and it will automatically show you how it changes across all 6 cases, in both singular and plural!
