Cardinal, ordinal, and collective numerals

Numerals in Kyrgyz fall into three main types: cardinal (how many?), ordinal (which in order?), and collective (how many together?). The number system is logical and easy to remember.

🧠 The Logic

Kyrgyz numerals are simpler than in many other languages. There's one key rule to keep in mind from the start:

After a numeral, the noun stays in the singular!

  • үч китеп (NOT китептер) — three books
  • он адам (NOT адамдар) — ten people
  • жүз сом — a hundred soms

This is a common mistake for English speakers learning Kyrgyz — the number already indicates quantity, so the plural is redundant.

The counting system is decimal and regular: learn the numbers 1–10 and the tens, and you can form any number.
