Numerals in Kyrgyz fall into three main types: cardinal (how many?), ordinal (which in order?), and collective (how many together?). The number system is logical and easy to remember.
🧠 The Logic
Kyrgyz numerals are simpler than in many other languages. There's one key rule to keep in mind from the start:
After a numeral, the noun stays in the singular!
- үч китеп (NOT
китептер) — three books - он адам (NOT
адамдар) — ten people - жүз сом — a hundred soms
This is a common mistake for English speakers learning Kyrgyz — the number already indicates quantity, so the plural is redundant.
The counting system is decimal and regular: learn the numbers 1–10 and the tens, and you can form any number.

🧮 Ordinal Numerals (Иреттик сан атооч)
Formed by adding the suffix -(и)нчи-(ы)нчы-(у)нчу-(ү)нчү following vowel harmony rules. The choice depends on the last vowel in the base.
| Number | Ordinal | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | биринчи | first |
| 2 | экинчи | second |
| 3 | үчүнчү | third |
| 4 | төртүнчү | fourth |
| 5 | бешинчи | fifth |
| 6 | алтынчы | sixth |
| 7 | жетинчи | seventh |
| 8 | сегизинчи | eighth |
| 9 | тогузунчу | ninth |
| 10 | онунчу | tenth |
| 20 | жыйырманчы | twentieth |
| 100 | жүзүнчү | hundredth |
Examples:
- Биринчи жолу көрүп жатам — I'm seeing it for the first time
- Экинчи кабатта жашайм — I live on the second floor
- Үчүнчү орунду алды — He took third place
- 21-чи кылым — 21st century (жыйырма биринчи)
Abbreviated Form
Ordinal numerals are abbreviated in writing:
- 1-чи = биринчи
- 2-чи = экинчи
- 3-чү = үчүнчү
💡 Collective Numerals (Жамдама сан атооч)
These indicate a group of a certain number of people: "the two of them," "the three of them," "the five of them." Formed with the suffix -өө-оо:

| 2 | экөө | two (together) |
| 3 | үчөө | three (together) |
| 4 | төртөө | four (together) |
| 5 | бешөө | five (together) |
| 6 | алтоо | six (together) |
| 7 | жетөө | seven (together) |
| 8 | сегизөө | eight (together) |
| 9 | тогузоо | nine (together) |
| 10 | оноо | ten (together) |
Examples:
- Экөөбүз кино көрдүк — The two of us watched a movie
- Үчөө келди — Three of them came
- Бешөөбүз иштейбиз — The five of us are working
Collective Numerals with Possessive Suffixes
