In Kyrgyz, Илик жөндөмө shows possession and answers the question Кимдин? Эмненин? (Whose? Of what?).
This is one of the most important cases because it is tightly linked to possessive suffixes. In Kyrgyz, the genitive case and the possessive suffix always work as a pair — this is a key difference from English.
🧠 Logic
The genitive case is used to show:
-
Possession — Whose is this?
- Атанын унаасы — Father's car
- Мектептин директору — The school's principal
-
Part of a whole — What is part of what?
- Үйдүн эшиги — The door of the house
- Китептин барагы — A page of the book
-
Relationship between concepts — What is the connection?
- Тарыхтын сабагы — A history lesson
- Балдардын оюну — The children's game
🔄 Comparison with English: In English you just add 's: "father's car". In Kyrgyz you change both words: атанын унаасы — the first word gets the case suffix, the second gets the possessive suffix.
🧮 Formula
Pattern: Stem + -НЫН-НИН-НУН-НҮН
where Н = н/д/т depending on the last letter of the stem
Step 1: Choosing the consonant (н/д/т)
According to the rules of sound assimilation:
| Last letter of stem | Consonant | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vowel (а, е, и, о, у, ы, э, ө, ү) | -н- | бала → баланын |
| Voiced (б, г, д, ж, з, й, л, м, н, р, ң) | -д- | жол → жолдун |
| Voiceless (к, п, с, т, ш, ч) | -т- | мектеп → мектептин |
Step 2: Choosing the vowel (ы/и/у/ү)
According to the rules of vowel harmony:
| Vowel group | Suffix | Example |
|---|---|---|
| а, я, ы | -ын | ата → атанын, кыз → кыздын |
| э, е, и | -ин | эне → эненин, дил → дилдин |
| о, ё, у, ю | -ун | жолдош → жолдоштун, суу → суунун |
| ө, ү | -үн | көл → көлдүн, түн → түндүн |
💡 Pattern: The vowel in the suffix always "rhymes" with the last vowel in the stem. Hear а/ы in the word — use -ын. Hear ө/ү — use -үн.

Chains of possession
In Kyrgyz you can build long chains of possession. Every word in the chain (except the last) takes the genitive suffix, and the last word gets the possessive suffix:
атамдын досунун унаасыатамmy fatherдынgenitiveдосуhis friendнунgenitiveунааcarсыhis/her→ the car of my father's friend
More chain examples:
| Kyrgyz | Literal | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| атамдын досунун унаасы | my-father his-friend his-car | my father's friend's car |
| агамдын балдарынын китептери | my-brother his-children their-books | my brother's children's books |
| мектептин директорунун кабинети | school's her-principal his-office | the school principal's office |
| Кыргызстандын тоолорунун сулуулугу | Kyrgyzstan's its-mountains their-beauty | the beauty of Kyrgyzstan's mountains |
| шаардын борборунун аянты | city's its-centre its-square | the square of the city centre |
💡 Tip: Read the chain from right to left, just like in English: унаасы (car) ← досунун (friend's) ← атамдын (my father's).
Long chain (4 levels):
апамдын эжесинин кызынын үйүапамmy motherдынgenitiveэжесиher sisterнинgenitiveкызыher daughterнынgenitiveүйhouseүhis/her→ the house of my mother's sister's daughter
⚠️ Important Details
1. The "Илик + Таандык" Bond
The genitive case always pairs with a possessive suffix on the second word. This is a golden rule of Kyrgyz:
- Атанын китеби (father's book) — "-нын" on the first word, "-и" on the second
- Менин досум (my friend) — "-ин" on the pronoun, "-ум" on the noun
2. Don't Confuse with the Ablative!
The genitive and ablative suffixes look very similar. The only difference is in the vowel:
| Case | Question | Suffix | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genitive (Илик) | Кимдин? Whose? | -ын | мектептин (of the school) |
| Ablative (Чыгыш) | Кайдан? From where? | -ан | мектептен (from the school) |
🛑 Common mistake: Confusing -дын/-тын (genitive) and -дан/-тан (ablative). Remember: ы/и/у/ү = whose, а/е/о/ө = from where.
3. Order of Suffixes
When declining a word that already has a possessive suffix, the genitive goes after the possessive:
китеп → китеп + им → китебим → китебим + дин → китебимдин
(book) (my book) (of my book)
🗣️ Conversational Forms
In spoken language the genitive is often dropped when the relationship between words is obvious:
| Literary form | Conversational form | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Атанын китеби | Ата китеби | Case dropped |
| Менин досум | Досум | "Менин" dropped |
| Сенин машинаң | Машинаң | "Сенин" dropped |
⚠️ Important: In written and formal speech, always use the full form with the genitive suffix.
Postpositions with the Genitive Case
Many postpositions express spatial relationships and require the genitive case:
| Postposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| алдында | in front of, under | үйдүн алдында — in front of the house |
| артында | behind | тоонун артында — behind the mountain |
| үстүндө | on top of, above | столдун үстүндө — on the table |
| жанында | next to, near | мектептин жанында — next to the school |
| ортосунда | in the middle of | шаардын ортосунда — in the city centre |
| арасында | among | агачтардын арасында — among the trees |
| сыртында | outside | үйдүн сыртында — outside the house |
| башында | at the beginning of | көчөнүн башында — at the start of the street |
