In English we use prepositions that come before the word: "with a friend", "for work", "about the weather". In Kyrgyz, that role is played by postpositions — they come after the word.
This is one of the key differences between Turkic languages and Western European ones. The word is first put into the appropriate case, and then the postposition is added.
🧠 Logic
Postpositions are function words that clarify the relationship between words: togetherness, purpose, direction, time, comparison.
The main rule: Case first, postposition second.
Word + [case ending] + postposition
Some postpositions require a specific case:
Most, however, are used with the nominative case (no ending):
💡 Main postpositions
Менен — "with" (togetherness, instrument)
The most common postposition. Used for:
Doing something together — "with whom?"
I watched a film with my friend
I went to the market with my mum
— Who are you talking to?
Instrument — "with what? using what?"
Write with a pen
I went by car
I made it by hand
Manner
Received with joy
Waited with great anticipation
Important: The word before «менен» is in the nominative case (no ending).
⚠️ Exception: The personal pronouns мен and сен take the accusative case with «менен»: мени менен (with me), сени менен (with you). The forms мен менен, сен менен are incorrect.

⚠️ Important nuances
Order: case first, postposition second
If a postposition requires a specific case, add the case ending first, then the postposition:
- Үй + гө (dative) + чейин = Үйгө чейин (to the house)
Nominative + postposition
Most postpositions are used with the nominative case (no ending):
- Дос + менен = Дос менен (with a friend)
