In English, we often set time limits: "Do this before I get back," "Let's get there before the rain starts," "I read before falling asleep."
In Kyrgyz, all three of these phrases translate to one single construction — -ганга чейин. It sets a boundary that an action happens — or needs to happen — before.
🧠 Logic
This form is assembled from the following suffixes:
- -ган: turns the verb into a result
- -га: the dative case ending (To whom? Where to? Toward what?)
- чейин: up to / until
Literally we're saying: "To the completed action — before."
Кел- (to come) → келген (one who came) → келгенге (to the coming) → келгенге чейин (up until he came / before he came)
келгенге чейинкелroot "to come"генparticiple (-ган)геdative caseчейинparticle "before"→ before [someone] came
🧮 Formula
Verb stem + suffix -ган-ген-гон-гөн-кан-кен-кон-көн + case ending -га-ге-го-гө + чейин
The -ган suffix — chosen according to vowel harmony:
- After vowels and voiced consonants: -ган/-ген/-гон/-гөн
- After voiceless consonants: -кан/-кен/-кон/-көн
The case ending in this case is always -га/-ге/-го/-гө, because the participle suffix always ends in the voiced -н.
💡 Examples: Getting things done by the deadline
Like other temporal constructions, -ганга чейин adapts to the tense of the main verb at the end of the sentence.
| Root | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| кел- (to come) | Мен келгенге чейин күтө тур. | Wait until I come / wait for me to arrive. |
| жаа- (to fall, of precipitation) | Жамгыр жааганга чейин жетип алалы. | Let's get there before the rain starts. |
| укта- (to sleep) | Ал уктаганга чейин китеп окуйт. | Before falling asleep, he reads a book. |
| кет- (to leave) | Сен кеткенге чейин сүйлөшөлү. | Let's talk before you leave. |
⚠️ Important notes
Action or thing?
The same rule applies here as in the "After" construction.
1. If you're talking about an ACTION
(Before working / eating / falling asleep)
Use verb + -ганга чейин.
- Мен иштегенге чейин тамак жейм. — Before working, I'll eat.
иштегенгеиштеroot "to work"генparticiple (-ган)геdative case→ to the working (dative case)
2. If you're talking about a THING or EVENT
(Before work / before class / before evening)
The -ган suffix is not needed. Take the word, add the dative case (-га/-ка) and add чейин.
| Example | Translation |
|---|---|
| Мен жумушка чейин тамак жейм. | I'll eat before work. |
| Сабакка чейин жолугабыз. | Let's meet before class. |
| Кечке чейин иштейм. | I'll work until evening. |
