Dative Case (Барыш): -га

Where to? To whom? — the case of direction and recipient

In Kyrgyz, Барыш жөндөмө shows direction and the recipient of an action — it answers the questions Кимге? Эмнеге? Кайда? (To whom? Where to?).

The name "Барыш" comes from the verb баруу (to go), which hints at its main function — pointing to the destination of movement.

🧠 Logic

The dative case is used to show:

  1. Direction of movement — Where to?

    • Мен мектепке барам — I'm going to school
    • Ал тоого чыкты — He climbed the mountain
  2. Recipient of an action — To whom?

    • Апама кат жаздым — I wrote a letter to mum
    • Балдарга оюнчук бердим — I gave toys to the children
  3. Time — By when?

    • Эртеңге даярда — Get it ready by tomorrow
    • Жумага чейин — By Friday
  4. Purpose — What for?

    • Тамакка акча керек — I need money for food
    • Окууга кирдим — I enrolled in school

⚠️ Important Details

1. Dative + Possessive Suffixes

When a word already has a possessive suffix, the dative changes form!

For 1st and 2nd person singular (my, your) — instead of -га/-ге, simply add -а/-е/-о/-ө:

Possessive+ DativeTranslation
унаам (my car)унаамаto my car
досум (my friend)досумаto my friend
атаң (your father)атаңаto your father

Don't say: унаамга, досумга, атаңга ✅ Say: унаама, досума, атаңа

For plural (our, your) the standard suffix is used:

  • үйүбүз → үйүбүзгө (to our house)
  • мектебиңер → мектебиңерге (to your school)

For 3rd person (his, her, their) — add -на/-не/-но/-нө:

Possessive+ DativeTranslation
көчөсү (his street)көчөсүнөto his street
унаасы (his car)унаасынаto his car
атасы (his father)атасынаto his father
унаасына

2. Dative + Postpositions

Some postpositions require the dative case:

  • чейин / дейре (until) — Үйгө чейин жүрдүм (I walked up to the house)
  • карай (towards) — Тоого карай бардык (We headed towards the mountain)
  • жараша (according to) — Талапка жараша (According to the requirement)
  • карагандa (compared to) — Мага карагандa (Compared to me)
  • карабастан (despite) — Жаанга карабастан (Despite the rain)

3. Fixed Expressions

Many verbs and constructions require the dative case:

  • жактыруу (to like) — Мага бул жагат (I like this)
  • керек (to need) — Мага китеп керек (I need a book)
  • жардам берүү (to help) — Ага жардам бер (Help him)
  • кошулуу (to join) — Бизге кошул (Join us)

4. Replacing English Prepositions "in" and "to"

In English we say "to school", "to work" — with prepositions. In Kyrgyz there are no prepositions, only the case suffix:

  • to school → мектепке
  • to work → жумушка
  • to the city → шаарга
  • up the mountain → тоого

5. The Аргасыз Construction

The construction «have to» (-ууга аргасыз) uses the dative case of a verbal form:

  • Барууга** аргасызмын** — I have to go
