After: -гандан кийин

Something happens after another action

In English, we often say: "After I eat, I'll leave" or "After the rain stops, we'll go for a walk."

To show that one action happens strictly after another, Kyrgyz uses the construction -гандан кийин. It works like a solid bridge between two events.

🧠 Logic

This form is assembled from three pieces:

  • -ган: turns the verb into a result (one who has done)
  • -дан: the ablative case ending (From where? From what?)
  • кийин: after / later

Literally, this multi-layered construction means: "From the completed action — after."

Кел- (to come) → келген (one who came) → келгенден (from the coming) → келгенден кийин (after coming)

🧮 Formula

Verb stem + suffix -ган-ген-гон-гөн-кан-кен-кон-көн + case ending -дан-ден-дон-дөн + кийин

The -ган suffix — chosen according to vowel harmony:

  • After vowels and voiced consonants: -ган/-ген/-гон/-гөн
  • After voiceless consonants: -кан/-кен/-кон/-көн

The case ending — always -дан/-ден/-дон/-дөн, because the participle suffix always ends in the voiced .

💡 Examples: A first, then B

Just like the -ганда form, this construction has no tense of its own. It works for both the past and the future — everything is decided by the verb at the very end of the sentence!

⚠️ Important notes

Action or thing?

A common mistake is using the full construction with -ган when a simple ablative case + кийин is enough.

1. If you're talking about an ACTION

(After working / eating / sleeping)

Use the full formula: verb + -гандан кийин.

  • Мен иштегенден кийин чарчадым. — After working, I was tired.

2. If you're talking about a THING or EVENT

(After work / after class / after lunch)

The -ган suffix is not needed. Take the word, add the ablative case (-дан/-тан) and add кийин.

ExampleTranslation
Мен жумуштан кийин чарчадым.I was tired after work.
Сабактан кийин жолугабыз.Let's meet after class.
Тамактан кийин уктады.He fell asleep after eating.
