Past Definite Tense

Expressing completed actions in the past

In Kyrgyz, Айкын өткөн чак (past definite tense) is used to talk about completed past actions.

You use it when:

  • An action definitely happened and is completed
  • You did it yourself or witnessed it with your own eyes
  • You are stating a concrete fact: «Мен кечээ дүкөнгө бардым» — I went to the shop yesterday

🔄 Comparison: English Simple Past ("I went", "I saw") doesn't specify whether you personally witnessed the action. In Kyrgyz, -ды/-ти emphasizes: "I know for certain, because I was there myself."

🧠 Logic

Айкын өткөн чак is the tense of certainty. The speaker is asserting: "I am sure of this fact."

When to use:

  • Personal experience: Мен бардым — I went (myself)
  • Something you witnessed: Ал келди — He came (I saw it)
  • Historical facts: Манас жашады — Manas lived

When NOT to use:

💡 English analogy: Similar to Simple Past (I went, I saw), but with the sense of "I was a witness."

🧮 Formula

Formula: Stem + -ДЫ-ДИ-ДУ-ДҮ + personal ending

where Д = д/т depending on the last letter of the stem

Step 1: Choosing the consonant (д/т)

According to the rules of sound assimilation:

Last letter of stemConsonantExample
Vowel or voiced (а, е, и, о, у, р, л, й, з, н, м, ң)-д-бар → барды, кел → келди
Voiceless (к, п, с, т, ш, ч)-т-кет → кетти, ич → ичти

Step 2: Choosing the vowel (ы/и/у/ү)

According to the rules of vowel harmony:

Vowel groupSuffixExample
а, я, ы-ды/-тыбар → барды, тап → тапты
э, е, и-ди/-тикел → келди, кет → кетти
о, ё, у, ю-ду/-тубол → болду, ук → укту
ө, ү-дү/-түкөр → көрдү, түш → түштү

Step 3: Personal endings

⚠️ Note: Past tense uses short personal endings, which differ from the present tense!

PronounEndingExample (бар-)Example (кет-)Translation
МенбардымкеттимI went / I left
СенбардыңкеттиңYou went / You left
Сиз-ңыз/-ңиз/-ңуз/-ңүзбардыңызкеттиңизYou went (formal)
Ал∅ (no ending)бардыкеттиHe/She went/left
БизбардыккеттикWe went / We left
Силер-ңар/-ңер/-ңор/-ңөрбардыңаркеттиңерYou (guys) went
Сиздер-ңыздар/-ңиздер/...бардыңыздаркеттиңиздерYou went (formal pl.)
Алар-(ы)шты/-(и)шти/-(у)шту/-(ү)штүбарыштыкетиштиThey went / They left

💡 Note: «Ал» has no personal ending — the suffix -ды/-ти itself marks the person. «Алар» always uses the cooperative voice: after consonants -ыш-иш-уш-үш, after vowels {-ш}: бар → барышты, кет → кетишти.

Negative form

Formula: Stem + -БА-БЕ-БО-БӨ + -ды + personal ending

The negation is placed between the stem and the tense suffix.

💡 Handy tip: After the negation (-ба/-па) there is always a vowel, so the tense suffix is always voiced (-ды/-ди/-ду/-дү). No need to think about -ты!

Last letter of stemNegationExample
Vowel or voiced-ба/-бе/-бо/-бөбар → барбадым, кел → келбедим
Voiceless-па/-пе/-по/-пөкет → кетпедим, ич → ичпедим

⚠️ Important notes

1. Don't confuse -ды/-ти with -ган/-кан

The most common mistake for learners is treating these forms as interchangeable. They convey a different degree of certainty:

FormMeaningExample
-ды/-тиI know for certain (I saw it, did it myself)Ал келди — He came (I saw it)
-ган/-канI heard or am assumingАл келген — He (reportedly) came

Correct: «Мен кечээ кино көрдүм» — I watched it myself ❌ Incorrect: «Мен кечээ кино көргөнмүн» — if you watched it yourself, use -дү

💡 Tip: If you can add "with my own eyes" — use -ды/-ти. If "I heard that..." — use -ган/-кан.

2. Historical facts also use -ды/-ти

For well-known historical events, the definite past is used even though you didn't witness them:

  • Манас жашады — Manas lived
  • Кыргызстан эгемендүүлүккө жетти — Kyrgyzstan gained independence

This is because the fact is certain and universally accepted.
