Good news: if you're reading this, you already know 90% of the Kyrgyz alphabet. It's based on Cyrillic and has 36 letters.
33 of them are identical to Russian letters. You won't need to learn a new script like Arabic or Georgian. Your main task is to master just 3 new letters and remember a couple of pronunciation quirks for familiar consonants.
🧠 3 unique Kyrgyz letters
These vowels and one consonant are the soul of the Kyrgyz language — they're what give it that distinctive melodic sound.

⚠️ Important: No Kyrgyz word begins with «Ң». It only appears in the middle or at the end of a word.
⚠️ "False friends": familiar letters that sound different
Kyrgyz has letters that look like their Cyrillic counterparts but are pronounced with their own twist. If you read them the Russian way, you'll still be understood — but the accent will give you away.
1. The letter «Ж» sounds like «DZH»
In standard literary Kyrgyz (and in northern dialects, including Bishkek), the letter Ж is almost always pronounced as a hard, plosive "DZH".
- Жок (no) is read as "Dzhok".
- Жакшы (good) is read as "Dzhakshy".
In southern Kyrgyzstan it is pronounced more softly, closer to the English "zh" sound.
2. The letters «К» and «Г» shift their sound
This is the coolest secret of native-like pronunciation. These letters each have two variants, depending on which vowels appear alongside them.
Regular (К, Г): If the word contains front/soft vowels (э, и, ө, ү), they are read like standard Cyrillic consonants.
- Кел, Күл, Гүл
Deep guttural (Kh, Gh): If the word contains back vowels (а, о, у, ы), the sounds drop deep into the throat. They are produced with a slight rasp, almost like Arabic or Kazakh Қ/Ғ.
- The word Кыргыз actually sounds like "Khyrgyz" (with a deep guttural К).
- Ага (older brother) — pronounced with a resonant, rolling quality, somewhat like the Ukrainian «Г».
This is the key to understanding vowel harmony — the fundamental rule of Kyrgyz grammar.
💡 "Guest" letters from Russian
The Kyrgyz alphabet contains 6 letters with no native Kyrgyz roots. They are used exclusively in loanwords (mostly from Russian) and international terms.
В, Ф, Ц, Щ, Ъ, Ь
You will never find a native Kyrgyz word with the letter «Ф» or «Ц». So words like Фабрика (factory), Цирк (circus), Вагон (wagon), Щетка (brush) are written and pronounced just as they are in Russian.
