In English, we often describe recurring actions or processes that build up over time: "Every time I hear that song, I cry," "The more I read, the more I understand," or "As time goes by..."
In Kyrgyz, all of these meanings are covered by one versatile word — сайын (every / each), which attaches to the verb.
🧠 Logic
The word сайын marks regularity or each individual step of a process.
To link it to an action, we turn the verb into a participle using the familiar suffix -ган.
Literally, the phrase «Мен барган сайын» translates as: "On each of my trips..." or "Every time I go..."
🧮 Formula
Verb root + suffix -ган-ген-гон-гөн-кан-кен-кон-көн + сайын
The suffix — chosen according to vowel harmony:
- After voiced consonants and vowels: -ган / -ген / -гон / -гөн
- After voiceless consonants (к, п, с, т, ш): -кан / -кен / -кон / -көн
барган сайынбарverb rootганparticipleсайынevery time→ every time [someone] goes
💡 Examples
This construction has two main meanings depending on context.
1. "Every time" (Repetition)
Used when one action consistently triggers another.
| Verb | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Бар- (to go) | Мен Бишкекке барган сайын, аны менен жолугам. | Every time I go to Bishkek, I meet up with him. |
| Көр- (to see) | Аны көргөн сайын сүйүнөм. | Every time I see him, I'm happy. |
| Ук- (to hear) | Бул ырды уккан сайын ыйлайм. | Every time I hear this song, I cry. |
2. "The more... the more" (Progression)
Used when an action accumulates and changes the situation.
| Verb | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Оку- (to read) | Китепти окуган сайын, кызыктуу болуп жатат. | The more I read the book, the more interesting it gets. |
| Жаша- (to live) | Бул жерде жашаган сайын, мага жагып жатат. | The longer I live here, the more I like it. |

⚠️ Important notes
1. The main trap: Verb or Time?
We don't slap the -ган suffix onto every word!
| Situation | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ACTION (every time I go / read) | verb + -ган сайын | Мен иштеген сайын тажрыйбам өсөт. — The more I work, the more my experience grows. |
| PERIOD OF TIME (every day / year) | noun + сайын | Күн сайын... — Every day... |
иштеген сайыништеverb rootгенparticipleсайынevery time→ the more [someone] works
Examples with nouns:
| Word | Example |
|---|---|
| Күн (day) | Күн сайын... — Every day... |
| Жыл (year) | Жыл сайын... — Every year... |
| Мүнөт (minute) | Мүнөт сайын... — Every minute... |
🛑 Never say: Күнгөн сайын or Жылган сайын. It's either Барган сайын (verb) or Күн сайын (noun)!
