Have to: -ыш керек

In English we have a whole set of words for obligation: "must," "have to," "need to." In Kyrgyz there's no separate verb for "must" in the familiar sense. For most situations, one universal word is used — керек.

🧠 The Logic and Literal Translation

To say "I need to go," if you translate it literally, you get: "My going is needed."

We take an action, turn it into a process (going, doing, reading), attach a label of "mine" or "yours," and add the word керек.

🧮 The Formula

Verb root + -ыш/-иш/-уш/-үш-ш + -ым-ың-ы-ыбыз-ыңар-ыңыздар + керек

The process suffix — chosen according to vowel harmony:

after a consonant: -ыш-иш-уш-үш
after a vowel: -ш

Whose process (possessive endings):

The word керек stands at the end like a rock and never changes!

Negative Form

Kyrgyz has two different negations — and this matters!

"Not necessary" (керек эмес)

Negate the word керек by adding эмес:

"Must not / Should not" (negating the verb)

Negate the action itself — add -ба-бе-бо-бө or -па-пе-по-пө to the verb:

⚠️ Important: "Барышым керек эмес" (not required, but I could) ≠ "Барбашым керек" (forbidden!)

Question Form

Add the particle -пи to the word керек (after the voiceless "к" it's always -пи):

Past Tense

The word керек doesn't change for tense. Add the auxiliary болчу (was):

Укта (sleep) + ш + ы + керек = Укташы керек (He needs to sleep)
Иште (work) + ш + ибиз + керек = Иштешибиз керек (We need to work)
Оку (read/study) + ш + уң + керек = Окушуң керек (You need to study)

Mini-dialogues

— Бүгүн иштешиң керекпи? — Do you need to work today?

— Жок, иштешим керек эмес. — No, I don't have to.

— Эртең келишиңиз керек. — You need to come tomorrow.

— Жакшы, келем. — Okay, I'll come.

— Бул жерде тамеки чегүүгө болобу? — Is smoking allowed here?

— Жок, чекпешиң керек. — No, you must not smoke.

⚠️ Important Nuances

1. Керек + a noun (no verb needed)

The word керек can also be used with just a noun — no verb at all. This is a very common everyday construction:

Нан керекпи?	Need some bread?	In a café or shop
Суу керек	Need water	A request
Акча керек	Need money	—
Жардам керекпи?	Need help?	Offering assistance

💡 Tip: This is the simplest way to ask "do you need something?" — just a noun + керек(пи).

2. Pronunciation: керек → герек

🗣️ In spoken Kyrgyz: The word керек almost always sounds like герек — the initial "к" gets voiced and sounds similar to "г". This is perfectly normal and not considered a mistake in speech.

3. Strict duty: тийиш

If you're talking not about everyday necessity but about a strict duty, obligation, or rule, the word тийиш (obliged) is used. The construction is different:

Мен барууга тийишмин — I am obliged to go
Сен аткарууга тийишсиң — You are obliged to fulfil it

But for 90% of everyday situations, the керек construction is more than enough!
