In English or Russian, expressing desire is straightforward: you take the verb "want" and put any action next to it. "I want to sleep."
But if you try to translate that literally into Kyrgyz, people may not understand you. Kyrgyz uses a special construction for desires.
🧠 The Logic and Literal Translation
In Kyrgyz you don't say "I want to go" directly — literally you say: "My going is coming." The action becomes your personal desire, which "comes" to you.
🧮 The Formula
Verb root + -гы/-кы-ги/-ки-гу/-ку-гү/-кү + -м-ң-ңыз-сы-быз-ңар-ңыздар + келет
The desire suffix — has 8 variants according to vowel harmony:
- after vowels and voiced consonants: -гы-ги-гу-гү
- after voiceless consonants: -кы-ки-ку-кү
Whose desire (possessive endings):
| Person | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Мен (I) | -м | баргым |
| Сен (you, sg.) | -ң | баргың |
| Сиз (you, formal) | -ңыз-ңиз-ңуз-ңүз | баргыңыз |
| Ал (he/she) | -сы-си-су-сү | баргысы |
| Биз (we) | -быз-биз-буз-бүз | баргыбыз |
| Силер (you, pl.) | -ңар-ңер-ңор-ңөр | баргыңар |
| Сиздер (you, formal pl.) | -ңыздар-ңиздер-ңуздар-ңүздөр | баргыңыздар |
| Алар (they) | -сы-си-су-сү | баргысы |
Negative Form
The desire simply doesn't come to you — put the verb келет into the negative form → келбейт.
| Pronoun | Affirmative | Negative | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| мен | баргым келет | баргым келбейт | I don't want to go |
| сен | баргың келет | баргың келбейт | you don't want to go |
| сиз | баргыңыз келет | баргыңыз келбейт | you don't want to go (formal) |
| ал | баргысы келет | баргысы келбейт | he/she doesn't want to go |
| биз | баргыбыз келет | баргыбыз келбейт | we don't want to go |
| силер | баргыңар келет | баргыңар келбейт | you don't want to go (pl.) |
| сиздер | баргыңыздар келет | баргыңыздар келбейт | you don't want to go (formal pl.) |
| алар | баргысы келет | баргысы келбейт | they don't want to go |
Past Tense ("I wanted")
Change the tense of "comes": келет → келди.
| Pronoun | Present | Past | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| мен | баргым келет | баргым келди | I wanted to go |
| сен | баргың келет | баргың келди | you wanted to go |
| ал | баргысы келет | баргысы келди | he wanted to go |
| биз | баргыбыз келет | баргыбыз келди | we wanted to go |
Question Form
Add the question particle -бы/-би to the verb келет → келеби.
| Pronoun | Affirmative | Question |
|---|---|---|
| мен | баргым келет | баргым келетпи? |
| сен | баргың келет | баргың келетпи? |
| сиз | баргыңыз келет | баргыңыз келетпи? |

⚠️ Important Nuances
1. The Pronoun Can Be Dropped
You don't have to use pronouns ("мен", "сен") because the possessive ending already shows whose desire it is:
- Баргым келет — I want to go
- Баргың келет — You want to go
- Баргысы келет — He/She/They want to go
Notice that the word келет doesn't change! My desire comes, your desire comes, his desire comes.
2. "Right Now I Feel Like It" — келе жатат
If the desire is felt right now, in this very moment, use the form with келе жатат (present continuous):
| Kyrgyz | Translation |
|---|---|
| Жумушума баргым келбей жатат | I really don't feel like going to work (right now) |
| Уктагым келе жатат | I'm feeling sleepy right now |
| Тамак жегим келбей жатат | I don't feel like eating right now |
💡 The difference: "Баргым келбейт" — I generally don't want to go (at all). "Баргым келбей жатат" — I don't feel like it right now, I'm just not in the mood.
3. Difference from «каалоо» (wanting an object or someone else's action)
The -гым келет construction only works when you yourself want to do something.
If you want an object or want someone else to do something — use the verb каалоо:
| Situation | -гым келет ❌ | каалоо ✅ |
|---|---|---|
| I want an apple | — | Алма каалайм |
| I want you to come | — | Сенин келишиңди каалайм |
| I want to go (myself) | Баргым келет ✅ | Барууну каалайм (possible, but rarer) |
🛑 Common mistake: Алма жегим келет — incorrect for "I want an apple." This means "I want to eat an apple," not "I want an apple (as an object)."
