Degrees of Comparison

Comparative and superlative forms

Need to say your portion of dumplings is bigger, the phone is newer, or your friend is the absolute best? Kyrgyz, just like English, has comparative and superlative degrees for adjectives.

🧠 The Logic

The great thing about Kyrgyz is that there are no irregular forms like English "good → better." The same formula applies to every adjective. Degrees of comparison are formed in three ways:

  • Comparative (-раак): "bigger," "newer"
  • Superlative (эң): "the biggest"
  • Absolute (reduplication): "pitch-black," "snow-white"

🧮 The Formula

Comparative Degree: Suffix -раак

To say "smarter," "bigger," or "more beautiful," add the suffix -раак-рээк-роок-рөөк to the adjective, following vowel harmony rules.

If the word ends in a vowel:

AdjectiveComparativeTranslation
жакшы (good)жакшыраакbetter
жаңы (new)жаңыраакnewer
кичине (small)кичинерээкa bit smaller
таттуу (sweet)таттуураакsweeter

If the word ends in a consonant:

A linking vowel (-ы-, -и-, -у-, -ү-) appears between the root and the suffix. Voiceless consonants become voiced before a vowel:

AdjectiveComparativeTranslation
чоң (big)чоңураакbigger
кымбат (expensive)кымбатыраакmore expensive
арзан (cheap)арзаныраакcheaper
суук (cold)суугураакcolder (к→г)
көп (many)көбүрөөкmore (in quantity) (п→б)

💡 Tip: Voiceless К and П become voiced Г and Б before the suffix vowel. This is the standard assimilation rule.

Comparing Two Things: Ablative Case -дан

In English we use the word "than": "My house is bigger than yours."

Kyrgyz has no word for "than"! Instead, it uses the ablative case (-дан), which means "from."

The literal logic is: "My house FROM your house is big."

And the adjective doesn't even need to be in the -раак form — the -дан case already creates the comparison!

Formula: Object 1 + Object 2 (-дан) + Adjective

KyrgyzLiteralTranslation
Мен сенден узунмунI from-you am tallI'm taller than you
Бул китеп тиги китептен кызыктууThis book from-that-book is interestingThis book is more interesting than that one
Учак поездден тезAirplane from-train is fastThe plane is faster than the train
Бишкек Оштон чоңBishkek from-Osh is bigBishkek is bigger than Osh

Superlative Degree: эң (the most)

This one is simple. To make something "the most," put the word эң before the adjective:

KyrgyzTranslation
Эң жакшыThe best
Эң чоң көйгөйThe biggest problem
Эң сулуу кызThe most beautiful girl
Эң арзан бааThe cheapest price

⚠️ Important Nuances

Absolute Degree

If something isn't just black but jet-black, or not just red but bright-red, you use reduplication of the first syllable with the letter П.

This works mainly with colors and sizes:

  1. Take the first syllable: кара (black) → syllable КА
  2. Add the letter ПКАП
  3. Join with a hyphen → Кап-кара (absolutely black)
AdjectiveAbsolute DegreeTranslation
кызыл (red)кып-кызылblazing red, crimson

чоң (big)чоп-чоңenormous
жаңы (new)жап-жаңыbrand new
