Question Words: Ким, Эмне, Кайда

Who, what, where, when, how much, why — all questions

To start speaking Kyrgyz, you absolutely need to be able to ask questions. In English the question word usually jumps to the front of the sentence (Where do you work?).

In Kyrgyz it's much simpler and more logical: the question word goes exactly where the answer will go.

  • Сен кайда иштейсиң?Мен банкта иштейм.
  • (Where do you work? — I work at the bank.)

🧠 Logic

Why doesn't the question word jump to the front in Kyrgyz? Because Kyrgyz has a fixed word order (SOV: subject–object–verb). The question word simply replaces the element being asked about:

  • Мен банкта иштейм. → Сен кайда иштейсиң?
  • Ал китепти окуйт. → Ал эмнени окуйт?

It makes sense: a question is a "hole" in the sentence that needs to be filled with an answer. The question word goes where the hole is.

💡 People and Things: Ким? and Эмне?

This is the foundation. But here lies one of the most fascinating cultural differences in Kyrgyz!

WordTranslationUsed for
КИМ?Who?ONLY for people
ЭМНЕ?What?For objects, phenomena, and... animals!

⚠️ The main trap: In English we ask about a dog or a cow: "Who is this?" In Kyrgyz, animals are not considered persons (адам эмес), so for any creature — from a mosquito to a horse — we ask: «Бул эмне?» (What is this?).

Examples:

  • Бул ким? — Бул менин досум. (Who is this? — This is my friend.)
  • Бул эмне? — Бул китеп. (What is this? — This is a book.)
  • Бул эмне? — Бул ит. (What is this? — This is a dog.)

💡 From the word "Ким" we already know how to form Кимдики? (Whose?).

💡 Place and Time: Кайда? and Качан?

When you need to find out a location or the time of a meeting, use these words.

WordTranslationNote
КАЙДА?Where? Where to?Main form
КАЯКТА? / КАЯККА?Where? Where to?Conversational
КАЧАН?When?

Examples:

  • Сен кайда жашайсың? — Where do you live?
  • Алар каякка кетишти? — Where did they go?
  • Сенин туулган күнүң качан? — When is your birthday?
  • Биз качан барабыз? — When are we going?

💡 Qualities and Choice: Кандай? and Кайсы?

Beginners often mix these two up. Let's settle the difference once and for all:

WordTranslationWhen to use
КАНДАЙ?What kind? How?Asks about quality, state, or manner of action
КАЙСЫ?Which one? Which?Asks about a choice among several options

Examples with КАНДАЙ:

  • Иштер кандай? — How are things? (What state are they in?)
  • Бул кандай кино? — What kind of film is this? (Interesting? Boring?)
  • Муну кандай жасайбыз? — How are we going to do this?

Examples with КАЙСЫ:

  • Сен кайсы үйдө жашайсың? — Which house (of these) do you live in?
  • Сага кайсы түс жагат? — Which colour do you like? (choose from the options)

💡 Quantity: Канча? and Нече?

When it comes to money, age, or time, you'll need these words.

WordTranslationUsage
КАНЧА?How many? How much? The most universal and common word
НЕЧЕ?How many?Mainly for time and dates

Examples:

  • Бул канча турат? — How much does this cost?
  • Сага канча жаш? — How old are you?
  • Саат канча / нече болду? — What time is it?
  • Бүгүн нечеси? — What's today's date?

💡 Reasons: Эмнеге? and Эмне үчүн?

When you want to get to the bottom of things, use these words formed from «Эмне» (What).

ЭМНЕГЕ?Why? What for?Conversational and most common
ЭМНЕ ҮЧҮН?Why? For what reason?More literary

Examples:

  • Сен эмнеге келген жоксуң? — Why didn't you come?
  • Эмне үчүн мага айткан жоксуң? — Why (for what reason) didn't you tell me?

⚠️ Golden Rule: Say No to the Double Question!

This is the most common mistake beginners make, and it sounds noticeably wrong to a native ear.

We already know that a regular yes/no question uses the particle -бы/-би:

  • Сен барасыңбы? — Will you go?

But if your sentence ALREADY HAS a question word (Ким, Эмне, Кайда), you must NEVER add the particle -БЫ! The question word has already done the work.

❌ Wrong✅ Right
Сен кайда жашайсыңбы?Сен кайда жашайсың?
Бул канча туратпы?Бул канча турат?

💡 The particle -бы is only for questions that can be answered "Yes" or "No".

  • Сен иштейсиңби? (Yes/No)
  • Сен кайда иштейсиң? (In the bank — no «-бы» needed here)
