Kyrgyz has no separate forms for present and future tense — they are merged into a single universal form. This is Учур-келер чак (present-future tense).
The same phrase Мен иштейм can mean:
- "I work" (in general, habitually)
- "I'll work" (a plan for the future)
Context will tell you which one is meant.
🧠 Logic
Учур-келер чак is the most common tense in Kyrgyz. It is used for:
- Regular actions and habits — Мен эртең менен чай ичем (I drink tea in the mornings)
- General truths and facts — Күн чыгыштан чыгат (The sun rises in the east)
- Plans and intentions — Эртең Бишкекке барам (I'll go to Bishkek tomorrow)
Unlike English, where there is a clear split between "I do" and "I will do", Kyrgyz combines these meanings into a single form. Which meaning applies is determined by context and time adverbs (эртең, бүгүн, ар күнү).
🧮 Formula
Verb root + linking vowel + personal ending
Step 1: The linking vowel
If the root ends in a consonant, add a linking vowel according to the vowel harmony law:
| Last vowel of root | Linking vowel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| А, Я, Ы, У, Ю | -а- | бар → бара... |
| И, Е, Э | -е- | кел → келе... |
| О, Ё | -о- | кой → коё... (й + о = ё) |
| Ө, Ү | -ө- | көр → көрө... |
If the root ends in a vowel, add -й-:
- иште → иштей...
- оку → окуй...
Step 2: Personal endings
| Pronoun | Ending | Example (бар) | Example (иште) | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Мен (I) | -мын-мин-мун-мүн or -м | барамын | иштеймин | I go / I work |
| Сен (You) | -сың-сиң-суң-сүң | барасың | иштейсиң | You go |
| Сиз (You, formal) | -сыз-сиз-суз-сүз | барасыз | иштейсиз | You go |
| Ал (He/She) | -т | барат | иштейт | He/She goes |
| Биз (We) | -быз-биз-буз-бүз | барабыз | иштейбиз | We go |
| Силер (You, group) | -сыңар-сиңер-суңар-сүңөр | барасыңар | иштейсиңер | You (guys) go |
| Сиздер (You, formal pl.) | -сыздар-сиздер-суздар-сүздөр | барасыздар | иштейсиздер | You (ladies and gentlemen) go |
| Алар (They) | -(ы)шат/-(и)шет/-(у)шот/-(ү)шөт | барышат | иштешет | They go |
For Мен, the shortened form -м is most commonly used. E.g., барам, келем, иштейм.
барасыңбарrootаlinking vowelсыңyou→ you go / you will go
💡 Note on «Алар» (They): The «алар» form always uses the cooperative voice. After consonants, add -ыш-иш-уш-үш; after vowels, add {-ш}: бар → барышат, иште → иштешет.
Negative form
To say "I don't do / I won't do", add the negation suffix -ба-бе-бо-бө (or voiceless variants -па-пе-по-пө), then -й- and the personal ending:
Formula: Root + -ба-бе-па-пе... + й + personal ending
| Affirmative | Negative | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Мен барам | Мен барбайм | I won't go / I don't go |
| Сен келесиң | Сен келбейсиң | You won't come |
| Ал иштейт | Ал иштебейт | He doesn't work |
| Биз угабыз | Биз укпайбыз | We don't hear (after voiceless «к» → «п») |
Question form
To ask a yes/no question, attach the question suffix -бы-би-бу-бү (or voiceless variants -пы-пи-пу-пү) to the end:
| Statement | Question | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Сен иштейсиң | Сен иштейсиңби? | Do you work? |
| Ал барат | Ал баратпы? | Is he going? (after «т» → «п») |
| Силер келесиңер | Силер келесиңерби? | Will you come? |
⚠️ Important notes
1. Habit vs. Right now
This is the most common mistake for English speakers. Learning that «Мен иштейм» means "I work", they start using it to answer a call while in the middle of working.
| Form | When to use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Мен иштейм (present-future) | Regular action or plan | Мен банкта иштейм — I work at a bank (in general) |
| Мен иштеп жатам (process) | Action happening right now | Азыр бош эмесмин, мен иштеп жатам — I'm busy, I'm working (right now) |
❌ Don't say: Азыр мен тамак жейм (lit. "Right now I eat"). It sounds like "I'm about to eat."
✅ Say: Азыр мен тамак жеп жатам (I'm in the process of eating).
