EssentialVerb Basics

Gerund: -ып/-ип/-уп/-үп

Verb form for sequential actions and auxiliary constructions

The verbal adverb in -ып is the main glue of the Kyrgyz language. It is a verb form that answers the question "doing what?" or "having done what?".

It serves two essential functions:

  1. Chains multiple actions into a single flowing sequence (came, saw, conquered).
  2. Serves as the base for dozens of auxiliary verbs that add emotion, speed, or direction to an action.

🧠 Logic

In Kyrgyz, a verb can only appear once with full grammar (tense, person, number). All other verbs in the sentence must appear in non-finite forms — and the -ып verbal adverb is perfect for this: it "freezes" an action, allowing the chain to continue without repeating the grammar.

🧮 Formula

How the verbal adverb is formed depends on what letter the verb root ends in.

1. Root ending in a vowel

Simply attach the single letter -п:

VerbVerbal adverbTranslation
иште- (to work)иштепworking
оку- (to read)окупreading
башта- (to start)баштапstarting

2. Root ending in a consonant

Choose one of 4 vowels for the suffix following the vowel harmony law:

Last vowel of rootSuffixExampleTranslation
А, Я, Ы-ыпбар → барыпgoing / having gone
И, Е, Э-ипкел → келипcoming / having come
О, Ё-упкой → коюпplacing / having placed
Ө, Ү-үпкөр → көрүпseeing / having seen

Spelling note: If the root ends in the consonant Й and vowel harmony requires -уп, the letters Й + У merge into Ю in writing: кой + уп = коюп (not койуп).

Function 1: Sequential actions

Usually you don't repeat the tense marker for each verb. Instead of "I went, I bought bread, I came home" — the full grammar is loaded onto only the last verb. The preceding actions are linked with the verbal adverb:

Жалкоо жатып уктайтLazy one, lying down, sleepsLies there and sleeps
Дүкөнгө барып, нан алып келдимGoing to the shop, taking bread, cameWent to the shop and brought bread

🔥 Julius Caesar's famous phrase "I came, I saw, I conquered" in Kyrgyz: «Келип, көрүп, жеңди» — a perfect illustration of this rule!

Function 2: Base for aspectual verbs

The -ып verbal adverb connects the main action to an auxiliary verb that changes the meaning:

Direction of benefit

The verbs ал- (to take) and бер- (to give) show who benefits from the action:

ConstructionMeaningExample
-ып алfor oneselfжазып алдым — wrote it down for myself
-ып берfor someone elseжазып бердим — wrote it down for them

Speed and decisiveness

This group conveys an emotional tone — decisiveness, abruptness, unexpectedness:

-ып койto do quicklyжазып кой — jot it down quickly
-ып салwent and did itыргытып салды — went and threw it away
-ып кетsuddenly/sharplyчыгып кетти — suddenly stormed out

Accidents and attempts

An action that happened unintentionally or that someone wants to try:

ConstructionMeaningExample
-ып калaccidentallyуктап калдым — accidentally fell asleep
-ып көрto tryжеп көр — try eating it

Completion of action

Show the degree of completion or the manner of an action:

ConstructionMeaningExample

-ып чыкto see through to the endокуп чыкты — read it all the way through
-ып жүрto do regularly in the backgroundжазып жүрөм — I've been writing (regularly)

Negative form

To say "without doing" (he left without saying goodbye), use the negative verbal adverb with the suffixes -бай/-бей/-бой/-бөй (and voiceless variants -пай/-пей/-пой/-пөй after voiceless consonants):

Root vowelsSuffixExample
А, Я, Ы-бай / -пайбарбай (without going), таппай (without finding)
И, Е, Э-бей / -пейкелбей (without coming), ичпей (without drinking)
О, Ё-бой / -пойболбой (without becoming)
Ө, Ү-бөй / -пөйкөрбөй (without seeing), түшүнбөй (without understanding)
