In English, we often use words like "all the way through" to show a completed action: "I read the whole book", "I went through all the documents", "we thought it over thoroughly".
In Kyrgyz, the same function is served by the auxiliary verb чыгуу (to go out / to come out). Attached to another action through a gerund, it shows that you went through the entire process from start to finish.
🧠 The Logic
The verb чыгуу means "to come out". When we combine it with a main action, we're literally saying: "Having done this, I came out the other side."
You entered the dark forest of the task, hacked a path through it, and made it out the other end. That means you covered the full volume of work from cover to cover.
Example: оку- (to read) → окуп (reading) → окуп чыктым (reading, came out = read it all the way through).
окуп чыктымокуread (stem)пgerundчыкcome out (auxiliary)тыpast tenseмI→ I read it (all the way through)
🧮 The Formula
Pattern: Stem + -ып-ип-уп-үп-п + чык + personal ending
The gerund suffix — by vowel harmony:
- after a vowel: -п (иште → иштеп)
- after a consonant:
- -ып for а, я, ы (жаз → жазып)
- -ип for и, е, э (бил → билип)
- -уп for о, ё, у, ю (кой → коюп)
- -үп for ө, ү (көр → көрүп)
💡 Spelling note: й + у is written as ю: кой + уп = коюп (not койуп)
Conjugating чык (handles tense and person):
| Form | Past | Present-future |
|---|---|---|
| мен | окуп чыктым | окуп чыгам |
| сен | окуп чыктың | окуп чыгасың |
| ал | окуп чыкты | окуп чыгат |
| биз | окуп чыктык | окуп чыгабыз |
Negative Form
Negation goes on the auxiliary verb чык:
| Affirmative | Negative | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| окуп чыктым | окуп чыккан жокмун | I didn't read it all the way through |
| окуп чыгат | окуп чыкпайт | he won't read it all the way through |
Question Form
| Affirmative | Question | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| окуп чыктың | окуп чыктыңбы? | did you read it all? |
| окуп чыгат | окуп чыгатпы? | will he read it all? |
💡 Examples
This form is a favorite of office workers, students, and managers because it speaks to a quality result.

— Китепти окуп чыктыңбы? — Did you read the book? — Ооба, окуп чыктым, абдан кызыктуу. — Yes, I read the whole thing, very interesting.
— Документтерди текшерип чык. — Go through the documents. — Макул, азыр текшерип чыгам. — Fine, I'll go through them now.
⚠️ Important Notes
1. -ып чыкты vs -ып бүттү
Both can translate as "finished", but the difference is significant:
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ып бүттү | The process came to an end | Китепти окуп бүттүм — I finished reading (maybe all of it, maybe just for today) |
| -ып чыкты | The entire volume was covered | Китепти окуп чыктым — I read the whole book (every page, first to last) |
For more on -ып бүттү, see Finish: -ып бүттү.
2. When NOT to use -ып чык
If you say «Тамакты жеп чыктым», it will sound like "having eaten, I came out" — as if you were eating while walking out of a room!
For food use жеп бүттүм (I finished eating).
The -ып чык form is used for informational and physical volumes:
- reading, checking, thinking, inspecting
