Continue: -а бер

In English, when you want to tell someone not to stop, you say "keep going", "continue working", or to encourage someone: "go ahead", "don't be shy".

In Kyrgyz, there's one short but very powerful construction for all of this — using the auxiliary verb берүү (to give).

🧠 The Logic

We take the main action, make it continuous (by adding a linking vowel), and attach the verb бер (to give).

The literal sense: "keep giving this action forward". You're pushing the process into the future, not letting it stop.

Two meanings:

Keep going — if someone is already doing something
Go ahead, feel free — if someone hasn't started yet or is hesitating

🧮 The Formula

Pattern: Stem + linking vowel -а-е-о-ө-й + бер + personal ending

Which vowel to use? By vowel harmony:

Consonant (а, я, ы, у, ю)	-а	бар → бара бер
Consonant (и, е, э)	-е	бил → биле бер
Consonant (о, ё)	-о	кой → коё бер
Consonant (ө, ү)	-ө	көр → көрө бер
Vowel	-й	иште → иштей бер

💡 Spelling note: й + о = ё: кой + о = коё бер (not ~~койо бер~~). Similarly: й + у = ю (коюп).

The word бер takes all the grammar (tense, person, questions):

Negative Form

Negation goes on the auxiliary verb бер:

The most direct meaning — to continue what's already started:

Жаза бергиле.	Keep writing (to a class).
Ал сүйлөй берди, мен уктап калдым.	He just kept talking and talking, and I fell asleep.

"Go ahead" (permission and encouragement)

If someone is hesitating to do something — -а бер means "Go ahead, it's fine!":

Жей бер!	Go ahead and eat! / Help yourself!
Кире бериңиз.	Please, come right in.
Сурай бер.	Go ahead and ask.
Бара бер.	Go ahead / Off you go.

— Мен кетсем болобу? — May I leave? — Бара бер. — Go ahead.

— Суроо берсем болобу? — May I ask a question? — Сурай бер! — Go right ahead!

⚠️ Important Notes

1. Context tells you the meaning

If the person is already doing something → "keep going"
If the person hasn't started yet or is hesitating → "go ahead, feel free"

2. Don't confuse with the plain imperative

Айт! — Say it (once)
Айта бер! — Keep talking, go on

3. Айта бер vs Айтып бер — these are completely different!

Note: айта бер and айтып бер are two entirely different things:

Айтып берчи — Tell me, please (ask someone to explain something)
Айта берчи — Keep going, you're fine (encourage someone not to stop)

4. In other tenses

The verb бер can take any tense:
