In Kyrgyz there are two ways to say you're doing something right now. And the difference between them is enormous!
Imagine: a friend calls and asks what you're up to.
- You're sitting with a textbook in your hands at this very second: «Мен кыргызча окуп жатам» (I'm studying Kyrgyz right now).
- You're walking down the street without a textbook, but in general you go to class twice a week: «Мен кыргызча окуп жүрөм» (I'm studying Kyrgyz — systematically, these days).
The construction -ып жүр shows that an action is stretched out over time. You do it regularly — it's part of your routine, or a "background" state of your life.
🧠 The Logic
The word жүр literally means "to walk/go around". So the construction -ып жүрөм literally means "I go around doing this" — meaning I carry this action with me through life.
When to use:
- Regular action: Мен машыгып жүрөм — I'm training (on an ongoing basis)
- Background state: Мен көз айнек тагынып жүрөм — I wear glasses
- Lingering plan: Ошол жөнүндө ойлонуп жүрөм — I've been thinking about that
When NOT to use:
- Action happening right now → use present continuous (-ып жатат)
🧮 The Formula
Pattern: Stem + -ып-ип-уп-үп-п + жүр + personal ending
Take the main verb, turn it into a gerund, and add the auxiliary verb жүр with its personal ending.
