This tense is used when an action is happening right now, at the moment of speaking. Unlike the present-future tense, which describes habits or plans, -п жат answers the question "What are you doing right now?".
| Form | When to use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Мен иштейм (present-future) | Regular action or plan | Мен банкта иштейм — I work at a bank (in general) |
| Мен иштеп жатам (process) | Action happening right now | Азыр бош эмесмин, иштеп жатам — I'm busy, I'm working (right now) |
🧠 Logic
The -п жат construction is the equivalent of the English Present Continuous (-ing). It shows that an action is happening at the moment of speech, not generally or regularly.
Why жат (to lie)? In Kyrgyz, auxiliary verbs often lose their literal meaning and become grammatical markers. Жат in this construction means "to be in the process of", not "to lie".
🧮 Formula
Verbal adverb (-ып/-ип/-уп/-үп) + жат + personal ending
The construction is built on the verbal adverb. First, form the verbal adverb from the verb, then add the auxiliary verb жат, which is conjugated by person.
