Essential🔄Aspectual Constructions

For Self & Other: -ып ал / -ып бер

Direction of action — towards self (ал) or away from self (бер)

In English, to show who benefits from an action, we use prepositions and pronouns: "buy it for me", "note it for yourself", "read it to him".

In Kyrgyz, the direction of an action — toward yourself or away from yourself — is expressed by two auxiliary verbs: алуу (to take) and берүү (to give).

🔄 Comparison with English: English says "buy me one" using a separate pronoun. In Kyrgyz, "сатып бер" already contains the meaning "for someone else" inside the verb itself.

🧠 The Logic

The main verb is turned into a gerund (-ып/-п), and then a "direction vector" is added:

AuxiliaryDirectionLiterallyMeaning
ал (take)→ toward self"Having done, take"For oneself, result stays with me
бер (give)← away from self"Having done, give"For another person, a favor

Literal translation:

  • Сатып алдым — Having bought, I took → I bought (for myself)
  • Сатып бердим — Having bought, I gave → I bought (for someone)

🧮 The Formula

Pattern: Stem + -ып-ип-уп-үп-п + ал/бер + personal ending

Step 1: The Gerund

Following the rules of vowel harmony:

Last letter of stemSuffixExample
Consonant (group а, я, ы)-ыпжаз → жазып
Consonant (group э, е, и)-ипкел → келип
Consonant (group о, ё, у, ю)-упбол → болуп
Consonant (group ө, ү)-үпкөр → көрүп
Vowel-поку → окуп

💡 Tip: The gerund is a "frozen" form of the verb. It doesn't change for person or number. All the grammatical work is handled by the auxiliary verb.

Step 2: Conjugating ал/бер

The auxiliary verb conjugates like a regular verb:

Pronoun-ып ал- (for self)-ып бер- (for another)
Менсатып аламсатып берем
Сенсатып аласыңсатып бересиң
Сизсатып аласызсатып бересиз
Алсатып алатсатып берет
Бизсатып алабызсатып беребиз
Силерсатып аласыңарсатып бересиңер
Сиздерсатып аласыздарсатып бересиздер
Аларсатып алышатсатып беришет

💡 Note: The verbs ал and бер belong to different vowel harmony groups, so their endings differ: алам but берем.

Negative Form

Negation goes on the auxiliary verb:

AffirmativeNegativeTranslation
сатып аламсатып албаймI won't buy (for myself)
сатып беремсатып бербеймI won't buy (for you)
сатып алдымсатып албадымI didn't buy (for myself)
сатып бердимсатып бербедимI didn't buy (for you)

Question Form

The question particle goes on the auxiliary verb:

AffirmativeQuestionTranslation
сатып аламсатып аламбы?will I buy (for myself)?
сатып беремсатып беремби?will I buy (for you)?
сатып алатсатып алатпы?will he buy (for himself)?
сатып беретсатып беретпи?will he buy (for someone)?

⚠️ Important Notes

1. Vowel doubling

If a single-syllable root ends in -п, the vowel inside it doubles when forming the gerund:

VerbGerundExample
тап (to find)таапТаап алдым — I found (it, for myself)
жап (to close)жаапЖаап бер — Close it (for me)

2. «Ал» can also mean completeness

Beyond the meaning "for oneself", the auxiliary verb ал often conveys result and completion — "managed to do it through to the end":

Example"For oneself""Completion"
Окуп алдымI read it (for myself, absorbed it)I read it (all the way through, finished)
Жазып алдымI wrote it down (for myself)I wrote it down (managed to, got it done)
Үйрөнүп алдымI learned (for myself)I learned (fully mastered)

💡 Tip: Often both meanings overlap. «Окуп алдым» means both "I read it for myself" and "I read it all the way through". Context will tell you which nuance matters most.
