In English, the word "try" covers everything: "try this cake", "try on this dress", "I'll try to read this". Kyrgyz handles these everyday experiments with an auxiliary verb — көрүү (to see/look) — which pairs with the main action.
🧠 The Logic
Kyrgyz doesn't just ask you to "attempt" something — it asks you to assess the result. The literal logic of the construction is: "Do it and see" (what comes of it, whether you'll like it).
- Take the main action and turn it into a gerund (-ып/-п)
- Add the verb көрүү (to see) and conjugate it
🧮 The Formula
Pattern: Stem + -ып-ип-уп-үп-п + көр (in the needed form)
кийип көрдүмкийstem "to put on"ипgerundкөр"to see" (auxiliary)дүмpast tense + I→ I tried it on (put it on and looked)
The gerund suffix is chosen according to vowel harmony:
- after a consonant: -ып-ип-уп-үп
- after a vowel: -п
Conjugating көр (it handles all the grammar — tense, person, questions):
| Form | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Imperative | жеп көр | try eating it |
| мен (present) | жеп көрөм | I'll give it a try |
| сен (present) | жеп көрөсүң | you'll try it |
| ал (present) | жеп көрөт | he'll try it |
| мен (past) | жеп көрдүм | I tried it |
| сен (past) | жеп көрдүң | you tried it |
| ал (past) | жеп көрдү | he tried it |
💡 Tip: The gerund is a "frozen" form of the verb. It doesn't change for person or number. All the grammatical work is done by the auxiliary verb көр.
Negative Form
Negate the verb көр in the standard way:
| Affirmative | Negative | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| жеп көрдүм | жеп көргөн жокмун | I never tried (eating) it |
| кийип көрдүм | кийип көрбөдүм | I didn't try it on |
| барып көрдүм | барып көрбөдүм | I didn't try going there |
Question Form
The question particle goes on көр. The choice of particle depends on the last letter:
- After voiced consonants and vowels — -бү: көрдүңбү?
- After the voiceless т — -пү: көрөтпү?
| Form | Translation |
|---|---|
| Жеп көрдүңбү? | Did you try it (taste)? |
| Кийип көрөйүнбү? | Should I try it on? |
| Барып көрөлүбү? | Should we go and see? |
| Жеп көрөтпү? | Will he try it? |
⚠️ Important Notes
-ып көр vs аракет кылуу
In English we use "try" for both tasting a cake and attempting to lift a heavy barbell. In Kyrgyz, these are two different concepts!
| Construction | Meaning | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| -ып көр | Experiment, evaluation | "Do it and see what happens" |
| аракет кылуу | Effort, attempt | Trying hard, straining yourself |
Compare:
Бул эшикти ачып көр — Try opening this door (maybe it's not locked — just push and see)
Бул эшикти ачууга аракет кылдым, бирок ачылбайт — I tried to open this door (with all my effort), but it won't open
If you say «Штанганы көтөрүп көрдүм», it sounds like you casually lifted the barbell to gauge the weight. If it was hard — say «көтөрүүгө аракет кылдым»!
