Kyrgyz has one short but incredibly powerful word — ӨЗ. It translates into English as "self", "own", or "oneself".
It comes up constantly: to emphasise independence (I'll do it myself), to talk about what is one's own (my own home, my own brother), or simply to intensify a phrase. Let's break down how it works.
🧠 Logic
Why do we need the word өз at all? In English we use "myself", "my own", and "myself" (as an object) — these are different words or phrases. In Kyrgyz all of these meanings are expressed through one root өз with different suffixes:
- өз + possessive suffix = "self" (өзүм — I myself)
- өз + noun = "one's own" (өз үйүм — my own home)
- өз + possessive + case = "myself/myself/oneself" in different cases (өзүмө — to myself)
This saves words and makes speech compact. One root — three functions.
💡 "I myself" / "You yourself"
The word өз is never used on its own. To say "I myself" or "he himself", you must attach possessive suffixes to it (the same "tails" of belonging that we learned for my, your, his).
Since the word өз ends in a consonant (and contains the narrow vowel Ө), we use suffixes with the letter Ү.

💡 Note: in the form Өздөрү the plural suffix -дөр comes before the possessive -ү.
💡 In Speech
- — Ким жасады? — Who did it?
- — Мен өзүм жасадым. — I did it myself. (lit.: I self-my did-I)
- Сен өзүң билесиң. — You know yourself. (lit.: you self-your know-you)
- Ал өзү келди. — He came himself. (lit.: he self-his came)
💡 "ONE'S OWN" (My own car, my own home)
In English we can say: "This is my car" or "This is my own car".
In Kyrgyz, to say "one's own" or "one's native", the word өз is placed before the noun (like an adjective).
⚠️ Important: The personal possessive ending (my/your) still needs to be attached to the noun itself!

- Бул менин өз унаам. — This is my own car. (lit.: this my own car-my)
- Бул менин өз апам. — This is my own mother. (lit.: this my own mother-my)
- Өз үйүм — өлөң төшөгүм. — Home is where the heart is. (lit.: own home-my — soft bed-my)
📖 The last example is a famous Kyrgyz proverb, equivalent to the English "There's no place like home."
🧮 "MYSELF", "YOURSELF", "ONESELF" in Different Cases
If you attach case endings to Өзүм / Өзүң, you get the full equivalent of the English word "myself/yourself/oneself" in all its forms.

💡 All other persons decline the same way: Өзүңө — to yourself, Өзүнө — to himself and so on.
🗣️ Conversational Uses
Өзү is often used as a discourse word with the meaning of "actually", "to be honest", or "in principle".
- Өзү, ал жакшы бала. — Actually, he's a good guy.
- Мен өзү барбайм. — I actually won't go.
Өзүнөн-өзү — By itself
You can also use the doubled form Өзүнөн-өзү (by itself, on its own):
- Эшик өзүнөн-өзү ачылды. — The door opened by itself.
