In English we use the word "that" or "which" to describe things: "the person who came", "the book that I was reading". In Kyrgyz there's no equivalent word — instead, a participle (-ган/-кан) does the job.
The key difference: in Kyrgyz the modifier always comes BEFORE the noun it describes.
🧠 Logic
In English the relative clause comes after the noun: "the person who came". In Kyrgyz it comes before: «келген адам» (lit. "the came person").
This actually makes things simpler: you don't need to change "who" into different forms depending on its role in the sentence. The participle ending -ган stays the same regardless.
| English | Kyrgyz | Literal |
|---|---|---|
| the person who came | келген адам | came person |
| the book that I read | мен окуган китеп | by-me read book |
| the house I live in | мен жашаган үй | by-me lived house |
🧮 Formula
Participle + Noun
| English (clause after) | Kyrgyz (participle before) |
|---|---|
| the person who came | келген адам |
| the book I read | мен окуган китеп |
| the house I live in | мен жашаган үй |
💡 Examples by type

| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Right |
|---|---|
| адам келген | келген адам |
Tense in the participle
| Meaning | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Past/general | -ган/-ген/-кан/-кен | келген адам (the person who came) |
| Action in progress | -е/-а жаткан | келе жаткан адам (the person who is coming now) |
| Future | -е/-а турган | келе турган адам (the person who will come) |

To say "who did not...", add the negative -ба/-бе/-па/-пе before -ган:
| Kyrgyz | Translation |
|---|---|
| Келбеген адам | The person who didn't come |
| Окубаган китеп | The book that wasn't read |
| Иштебеген күн | A day when no work was done |
келбегенкелrootбеnegationгенparticiple→ who didn't come
