In English, we often say: "I came to help you," "He left to study," or "We went to eat." We name an action and immediately indicate the direction of movement toward that purpose.
In Kyrgyz, these situations use the purposive form -ганы/-гени/-гону/-гөнү, which combines with verbs of motion (кел-, бар-, кет-, чык-).
🧠 Logic
This construction takes a target action and frames it as the reason for the movement.
🧮 Formula
Stem of the target verb + purposive form -ганы-гени-гону-гөнү-каны-кени-кону-көнү + verb of motion
The form is chosen according to vowel harmony and sound assimilation:
| Last letter of stem | Suffix | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vowel or voiced consonant | -ганы/-гени/-гону/-гөнү | көр → көргөнү, оку → окуганы |
| Voiceless (к, п, с, т, ш) | -каны/-кени/-кону/-көнү | чык → чыкканы, кеч → кечкени |
Verbs of motion that go at the end:
| Verb | Meaning |
|---|---|
| кел- | to come |
| бар- | to go |
| кет- | to leave / go away |
| чык- | to go out |
Negative and question forms
In this construction, negation and questions are placed on the final verb (the verb of motion), not on the purposive form:
| Type | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | Сен жардам бергени келдиң. | You came to help. |
| Question | Сен жардам бергени келдиңби? | Did you come to help? |
| Negative | Мен сени көргөнү келген жокмун. | I didn't come to see you. |
💡 Examples
The purposive form doesn't change by person — person and tense are expressed on the verb of motion.
| Example | Translation |
|---|---|
| Мен сени көргөнү келдим. | I came to see you. |
| Ал Бишкекке окуганы кетти. | He left for Bishkek to study. |
| Биз кафеге тамак жегени барабыз. | We're going to a cafe to eat. |
| Мен сага жардам бергени келдим. | I came to help you. |
| Балдар эшикке ойногону чыгышты. | The kids went outside to play. |
⚠️ Important notes
-ганы vs -ыш үчүн
Both constructions express purpose, but they're used in different contexts:
| Form | When to use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ыш үчүн | Universal purpose — with any verb | Унаа алыш үчүн, мен көп иштейм. — To buy a car, I work a lot. |
| -ганы | Only with verbs of motion | Мен сени көргөнү келдим. — I came to see you. |
The -ганы form sounds more natural and compact when the purpose is the reason for the movement.
Compare:
- Мен сени көрүш үчүн келдим. — Grammatically correct, but longer.
- ✅ Мен сени көргөнү келдим. — More natural Kyrgyz.
Only with verbs of motion!
🛑 Common mistake: Унаа алганы иштейм — this is unnatural for this construction, because "to work" is not a verb of motion. For that meaning, use the -ыш үчүн construction.
