An adverb (тактооч) is an invariable word that describes an action and answers the questions «Кандай?» (How?), «Качан?» (When?), «Кайда?» (Where?), «Канча?» (How much?).
The defining feature of adverbs is their invariability. They don't decline and don't conjugate.
🧠 The Logic
What are adverbs for? They add information about an action — when, where, how, and to what degree something happens. Without adverbs, speech would be dry and imprecise.
Kyrgyz has one important feature: many words can be both adjectives and adverbs — it all depends on their position in the sentence. Before a noun — an adjective; before a verb — an adverb. This "chameleon rule" makes things easier: you don't need to learn separate forms.
💡 Types of Adverbs
Kyrgyz adverbs fall into 4 main groups:
| Type | Question | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Manner | Кандай? Кантип? (How?) | жакшы, бат, жай |
| Time | Качан? (When?) | бүгүн, эртең, кечээ |
| Place | Кайда? Кайдан? (Where? From where?) | мында, анда, ары |
| Degree and measure | Канча? (How much?) | көп, аз, абдан |

⚠️ Important Nuances
1. Position in the Sentence
Adverbs are usually placed before the verb:
- Ал жакшы окуйт. — He studies well.
- Мен бүгүн келем. — I'll come today.
2. Multiple Adverbs in a Row
When there are multiple adverbs, the typical order is: time → place → manner:
- Бүгүн мында жакшы иштедик. — We worked well here today.
3. Negation
In negative combinations the word эч is used (more in the article on indefinite pronouns):
- эч качан — never
- эч жерде — nowhere
- эч кайда — to nowhere
- такыр + negation — not at all
⚠️ With эч, the verb is normally in negative form: эч качан келбейт — never comes.
