In English we freely juggle words like "someone", "anything", "everyone", and "nobody". Kyrgyz has a whole arsenal of words for these concepts, and they work by different rules.
The key difference: Kyrgyz has no single universal particle like the English "-one", "-thing", or "-body". Instead, there are separate words for different situations.
🧠 Logic
Why does Kyrgyz have so many different words for "someone" and "everyone"? Because the language distinguishes three situations:
- Affirmative — talking about someone/something without knowing exactly who (бирөө, бир нерсе)
- Universal — talking about everyone or everything (баары, ар бир)
- Negative — saying there is nobody/nothing (эч ким, эч нерсе)
Each group uses its own words. Mixing them up is like saying "nobody came" when you mean "someone came".
🧮 Formula: Three Groups
| Group | English equivalent | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | Someone, something | бирөө, бир нерсе, кимдир бирөө |
| Universal | Everyone, each, any | ар бир, ар ким, баары, бардыгы |
| Negative | Nobody, nothing | эч ким, эч нерсе, эч качан |
💡 Someone / Something (Affirmative)
БИРӨӨ — Someone, a certain person
Literally: бир (one) + өө (suffix). Used when talking about an unknown person.
- Бирөө эшикти какты. — Someone knocked on the door.
- Бирөө менен сүйлөштүм. — I talked with someone.
- Мага бирөө керек. — I need someone.
БИР НЕРСЕ — Something
Literally: бир (one) + нерсе (thing).
- Бир нерсе түшүп кетти. — Something fell.
- Бир нерсе айткым келет. — I want to say something.
- Менде сага бир нерсе бар. — I have something for you.
КИМДИР БИРӨӨ — Some person, somebody or other
Intensified indefiniteness: кимдир (some-who) + бирөө (someone). The speaker emphasises they have no idea who this is.
- Кимдир бирөө сени издеп жүрөт. — Someone is looking for you.
- Кимдир бирөө айтты. — Somebody or other said it (I don't know who).
КАНДАЙДЫР (БИР) — Some kind of, a certain
Formed from the question word кандай (what kind). Used for indefinite qualities.
- Кандайдыр бир сезим. — Some kind of feeling.
- Ал кандайдыр бир жерге кетти. — He went somewhere (to some place).
💡 Everyone / Each (Universal)
АР (КИМ / НЕРСЕ / КАЧАН / КАЙДА) — Each, every
The particle ар turns question words into "every-":
| Combination | Translation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ар ким | everyone, whoever | Ар ким өз ишин билет. — Everyone knows their own business. |
| ар нерсе | everything | Ар нерсенин өз убагы бар. — Everything has its own time. |
| ар качан | always, every time | Ал ар качан жардам берет. — He always helps. |
| ар кайда | everywhere | Ар кайда адамдар көп. — There are people everywhere. |
АР БИР — Each (individually)
Emphasises that we're talking about each one separately, not as a group.
- Ар бир адам уникалдуу. — Every person is unique.
- Ар бир күн маанилүү. — Every day matters.
- Ар бирин текшерип чык. — Check each one (individually).
БААРЫ / БАРДЫГЫ — All, everyone (as a group)
Two synonyms for "everyone" or "everything". Бардыгы is more literary.
- Баары түшүндүбү? — Did everyone understand?
- Бардыгы жакшы. — Everything is fine.
- Баарыбыз чогуу барабыз. — We're all going together.
💡 Note: The word баары can take possessive suffixes:
- баарыбыз — all of us
- баарыңар — all of you
- баары — all of them
КЭЭ БИР / КЭЭ БИРӨӨ — Some, certain ones
Points to a part of a group, not all of them.
- Кээ бир адамдар каршы болду. — Some people were against it.
- Кээ бирөөлөр кетти. — Some people left.
- Кээде — sometimes (from the same root).
💡 Nobody / Nothing (Negative)
The particle эч turns question words into absolute negatives.
⚠️ The main rule: After эч ким / эч нерсе the verb MUST be in negative form or with жок!
| Combination | Translation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| эч ким | nobody | Эч ким келбеди. — Nobody came. |
| эч нерсе | nothing | Эч нерсе түшүнбөдүм. — I understood nothing. |
| эч качан | never | Эч качан унутпайм. — I'll never forget. |
| эч кайда | nowhere | Эч кайда барбадым. — I didn't go anywhere. |
| эч кандай | no kind of | Эч кандай жооп жок. — There is no answer. |
Examples with double negation
In Kyrgyz, as in many languages, double negation is grammatically correct (unlike in English):
- Эч ким эч нерсе айткан жок. — Nobody said anything.
- Эч кайдан эч кандай кабар жок. — There's no news from anywhere.

⚠️ Important Details
1. "Someone" vs "Anyone"
English distinguishes between "someone" (a specific but unknown person) and "anyone" (whoever). In Kyrgyz this difference is conveyed by context:
- Бирөө келдиби? — Did anyone come? (question)
- Бирөө келди. — Someone came. (statement)
2. Declining Through Cases
Indefinite pronouns decline through cases:
| Case | Бирөө | Баары |
|---|---|---|
| Атооч (Who?) | бирөө | баары |
| Илик (Whose?) | бирөөнүн | баарынын |
| Барыш (To whom?) | бирөөгө | баарына |
| Табыш (Whom?) | бирөөнү | баарын |
| Жатыш (Where?) | бирөөдө | баарында |
| Чыгыш (From whom?) | бирөөдөн | баарынан |
💡 Note: The word «баары» declines following the rules for words with a 3rd person possessive suffix — that's why the letter «н» appears before the case ending: баарынын, баарына, баарында, баарынан.
3. Word Order with «эч»
The particle эч always comes before the question word and is never separated from it:
- ✅ Эч ким келбеди.
- ❌
Ким эчкелбеди.
4. «Ар бир» vs «Баары»
| Ар бир | Баары |
|---|---|
| Each individually | All as a group |
| Ар бир студент сынак тапшырды. | Баары сынак тапшырды. |
| (Each student submitted the exam) | (Everyone submitted the exam) |
