Physiological States

How body expresses states: hunger, cold, sleepiness

If you try to translate "I'm hungry" into Kyrgyz word for word (using ач — hungry), people will understand you, but it will sound unnatural.

The thing is, in Kyrgyz physical states are expressed not with adjectives but with verbs. The body performs actions on its own: a stomach opens, sleep comes, and cold seeps in.

🧠 The Main Paradox: Why Do We Use the Past Tense?

Before we get to the phrases, there's one super-important rule to keep in mind.

When you want to say that you're hungry or sleepy right now, you use the verb in the Definite Past Tense (-ды)!

Why? The logic of Kyrgyz is that the process of getting cold or getting tired has already been completed, and now you're living with the result of that action.

  • "I'm tired" — the action has already happened, the result is visible.
  • "I'm hungry" — the stomach has already emptied, now I want to eat.

Let's go through the most common states.

🗣️ 1. Hunger, Fullness, and Thirst

In Kyrgyz, the main character in your hunger is курсак (stomach/belly).

How to Say "I'm Hungry / I Want to Eat"

The verb ачуу (to open) is used. Literally: "My stomach has opened." Don't forget to add a possessive suffix to "stomach" (whose stomach?).

  • Курсагым ачты. — I'm hungry / I want to eat.
  • Курсагың ачтыбы? — Are you hungry?
  • Балдардын курсагы ачты. — The children are hungry.

If the hunger is unbearable, you can use the present tense: «Курсагым ачып жатат» — My stomach is "opening" right now / I'm starving.

How to Say "I'm Full / I've Eaten Enough"

The verb тоюу (to be satisfied, to fill up) is used.

  • Тойдум. — I'm full.
  • Курсагым тойду. — My stomach is full.

How to Say "I'm Thirsty"

The verb суусоо (to be thirsty, from «суу» — water) is used.

  • Суусадым. — I'm thirsty / My throat has gone dry.
  • Абдан суусап кеттим. — I got really thirsty.

🗣️ 2. Sleep and Tiredness

Here the main character is уйку (sleep). In Kyrgyz, sleep is an independent entity that comes to you on its own.

How to Say "I'm Sleepy / I Want to Sleep"

The verb келүү (to come) is used. Literally: "My sleep has come."

  • Уйкум келди. — I'm sleepy (sleep has come to me).
  • Уйкуң келдиби? — Are you sleepy?

The intensified version: Уйкум келип жатат. — I'm falling asleep on my feet (sleep keeps coming and coming).

How to Say "I'm Tired"

The verb чарчоо (to get tired) is used.

  • Чарчадым. — I'm tired.
  • Бүгүн жумуштан аябай чарчадым. — I was absolutely exhausted by work today.

How to Say "I've Rested"

The verb дем алуу (to rest / to breathe) is used.

  • Дем алдым. — I've rested.
  • Кичине дем алалычы. — Let's take a little rest.

🗣️ 3. Temperature: Cold and Heat

In English we say "I'm cold" as a feeling you have. In Kyrgyz you are the active participant in the process — you are the one who freezes.

How to Say "I'm Cold / I'm Freezing"

The verb үшүү (to freeze, to feel cold) is used.

  • Үшүдүм. — I'm cold / I've frozen.
  • Сен үшүдүңбү? — Are you cold?

A non-verb alternative: Мага суук болуп жатат. — I'm feeling cold.

How to Say "I'm Hot / I'm Sweating"

The verbs ысуу (to heat up) or тердөө (to sweat) are used.

  • Ысып кеттим. — I got hot (I've heated up).
  • Тердедим. — I'm sweating.

🗣️ 4. Pain and Illness

When something hurts, that body part is performing an action. We use the verb ооруу (to ache, to hurt). Unlike hunger, here we more often use the Present Continuous Tense (-ып жатат), because the pain is happening right now.

  • Башым ооруп жатат. — My head hurts (my head is aching away).
  • Тишим ооруп жатат. — My tooth hurts.
  • Тамагым ооруп жатат. — My throat hurts.

If you're talking about getting ill in general (fell ill), use the past tense:

  • Мен ооруп калдым. — I got sick.
  • Сасык тумоо болуп калдым. — I caught a cold (I became a cold).
