If you try to translate the phrase "I am a doctor" into Kyrgyz word-for-word, you'd get «Мен дарыгер». In casual spoken language people will understand you perfectly. But grammatically it sounds just as odd as a foreign speaker saying "Me be doctor" in English.
🧠 Logic
In Kyrgyz (like English with its am/is/are) you can't just throw two words next to each other. Instead of a separate linking word, Kyrgyz uses personal endings (жак мүчөлөр). You take the key word and "put on" an ending that acts as your personal stamp.
Why is this needed? A personal ending simultaneously:
- Shows who (I, you, we...)
- Replaces the verb "to be"
- Makes the sentence grammatically complete
🧮 Formula
Each pronoun has its own endings. The vowel inside changes according to vowel harmony.
| Pronoun | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Мен (I) | -мын-мин-мун-мүн | студентмин |
| Сен (You) | -сың-сиң-суң-сүң | студентсиң |
| Сиз (You formal) | -сыз-сиз-суз-сүз | студентсиз |
| Биз (We) | -быз-биз-буз-бүз or -пыз-пиз-пуз-пүз | туристпиз |
| Силер (You group) | -сыңар-сиңер-суңар-сүңөр | студентсиңер |
| Сиздер (You formal pl.) | -сыздар-сиздер-суздар-сүздөр | студентсиздер |
| Ал / Алар (He, She / They) | ∅ (nothing!) | студент / студенттер |
Note about «Биз»: The «Б» devoices. If the word ends in a voiceless consonant, use the variants with «П»: -пыз / -пиз / -пуз / -пүз.
💡 Examples
Situation 1. Who am I? (Professions and statuses)
The most basic use. Attach the ending directly to the noun.
- Мен студентмин. — I am a student.
- Сен программистсиң. — You are a programmer.
- Сиз дарыгерсиз. — You are a doctor.
- Ал менеджер. — He/She is a manager (no ending needed for «Ал»!).
- Биз туристпиз. — We are tourists (here «б» devoiced because of the «т»).
Situation 2. What am I like? (Qualities and properties)
The same endings attach just as naturally to adjectives.
- Сен сулуусуң. — You are beautiful.
- Мен акылдуумун. — I am clever.
- Биз даярбыз. — We are ready.
- Ал бактылуу. — He/She is happy.
Situation 3. Where am I? (Location)
To say where you are, you need a two-step combo:
- Put the word in the Locative Case (Жатыш жөндөмө) by adding the "where?" suffix (-да-де-та-те).
- Then attach our personal ending on top of that!
Watch how it assembles:
үйдөмүнүйrootдөlocative caseмүнI (copula)→ I am at home
- Үй (house) → үйдө (at home) → Мен үйдөмүн (I am at home).
- Мектеп (school) → мектепте (at school) → Сен мектептесиң (You are at school).
- Жумуш (work) → жумушта (at work) → Биз жумуштабыз (We are at work).
⚠️ Important Details
1. Common Confusion: "How old are you?" vs "Where do you live?"
These two phrases sound similar because people miss where the verb is hiding.
Канча жаштасыз? (How old are you?) There's no action here. This is our location construction (Situation 3). Жаш (age) + та (in) + сыз (you are). Literally: "In how many years are you located?"
Кайда жашайсыз? (Where do you live?) Here the verb жашоо (to live) is working in the present-future tense. Жаша (live) + й (tense suffix) + сыз (you). Literally: "Where do you reside?"
2. Negation: "I am NOT..."
Use the particle эмес (not). The main rule: the personal ending detaches from the word and jumps onto «эмес»!
- Мен студент эмесмин. — I am not a student.
- Биз үйдө эмеспиз. — We are not at home.
3. Question: "Are you...?"
The question particle -бы-би-бу-бү attaches to the very end, right on top of the personal ending.
- Сен студентсиңби? — Are you a student?
- Сиз үйдөсүзбү? — Are you at home?
4. Question + Negation: "Aren't you...?"
Put it all together! Take «эмес», add the personal ending, and close with the question particle.
- Сен студент эмессиңби? — Aren't you a student?
- Сиз даяр эмессизби? — Aren't you ready?
- Мен туура эмесминби? — Am I wrong? (lit. "Am I not right?")
5. The Economy Rule for Plurals
Learners often fall into a trap here. Wanting to say "We are students" or "You are doctors", they habitually put the noun in the plural and then add an ending: Биз студенттербиз.
In Kyrgyz this isn't needed! A strict economy rule applies: don't show plural twice.
The endings -быз (we), -сыңар (you group), -сыздар (you formal group) ALREADY loudly declare "there are many of us!" So the noun itself stays in the singular.
- Биз студентпиз (We are students / lit.: We student-we).
- Силер дарыгерсиңер (You are doctors).
❗ Exception — Алар (They). As we know, the 3rd person has a zero ending. The word has no way to show "a crowd" except through the noun itself. So only for «Алар» do we add the plural suffix to the noun:
- Алар студенттер (They are students).
- Алар дарыгерлер (They are doctors).
