To say "I am a student", you add a personal ending: Мен студентмин. But what if you've just found out that someone is a student? Or someone told you about it? Or you're surprised by the fact?
In English we add phrases like "apparently", "they say", "it seems". In Kyrgyz there's a dedicated particle for this — экен.
🧠 Logic and Literal Meaning
Экен is an evidential (source-marking) form of the verb "to be". It signals to the listener: "I wasn't there to witness this personally" or "This is new information for me".
Compare:
- Ал студент. — He is a student. (Neutral fact, 3rd person needs no ending)
- Ал студент экен. — It turns out he's a student. / Apparently he's a student.
🧮 Formula
Word + экен (for 3rd person, the most common case)
For other persons, add personal endings:
| Person | Form | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Мен | экенмин | Мен студент экенмин | It turns out I'm a student |
| Сен | экенсиң | Сен чарчаган экенсиң | You're tired, it turns out |
| Сиз | экенсиз | Сиз дарыгер экенсиз | You're a doctor, it turns out |
| Ал | экен | Ал бай экен | He's rich, it turns out |
| Биз | экенбиз | Биз бактылуу экенбиз | We're happy, it turns out |
| Силер | экенсиңер | Силер даяр экенсиңер | You're ready, it turns out |
| Сиздер | экенсиздер | Сиздер мугалим экенсиздер | You're teachers, it turns out |
| Алар | экен | Алар студенттер экен | They're students, it turns out |
Important: Unlike regular personal endings that attach to the word (студентмин), the particle экен is written separately!
💡 Notice the pattern: standard personal endings (-мин, -сиң, -сиз, etc.) simply attach to экен, just as in the regular "to be" copula.
Negative Form
To say "it turns out... not...", use эмес экен or жок экен:
| Construction | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| эмес экен | Ал студент эмес экен | It turns out he's not a student |
| жок экен | Акча жок экен | It turns out there's no money |
| эмес экен + person | Мен даяр эмес экенмин | It turns out I'm not ready |
💡 Examples

- Сен акылдуу экенсиң! — You're actually clever, it turns out!

Situation 3. Softened Statement / Politeness

- Бул баалуу экен. — This seems expensive.
⚠️ Экен vs -ыптыр: What's the Difference?
Both forms express "it turns out", but there's a key distinction:
| Form | What it describes | Example | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| экен | State / Quality | Ал бай экен | He is (apparently) rich — this is his current state |
| -ыптыр | Action / Event | Ал байыптыр | He (apparently) got rich — an action occurred |
Breaking it down:
- Ал бай экен — «бай» (rich) is a quality of the person right now
- Ал байыптыр — the process of becoming rich is already complete, something changed
More examples:
- Ал чарчаган экен. — He's apparently exhausted. (current state)
- Ал чарчаптыр. — He apparently got tired. (something happened, he became tired)
⚠️ Important Details
1. Экен in Past Time: болчу экен

- Бул жер сулуу болчу экен. — I hear this place used to be beautiful.
2. Экен in Questions

- Бул канча экен? — I wonder how much this costs?
- Кандай экен? — What's it like? / I wonder what it's like?

- Сен билесиң турбайбы? — You know, don't you?
