Flow🕐Voice & Mood

Evidential Past: -птыр

Action learned about indirectly

This tense is used when you are talking about past events you did not witness yourself, or when you suddenly discover that something has happened.

You use the -ыптыр form when:

  1. Retelling news or hearsay: "Apparently he bought a car" (you didn't see the purchase — someone told you).
  2. Suddenly realizing something: "Oh, turns out I forgot my keys!" (you reached into your pocket and only then understood).
  3. Reacting with surprise to a change: "Wow, look how you've grown!"

🧠 The Logic

This tense is a marker of evidentiality. The speaker signals that they were not a direct witness to the event, or that the result came as a surprise.

Historically, the suffix -ыптыр was formed by merging the gerund -ып (doing) with the word тур (to stand / to be in a state).

When to use:

  • Retelling: Ал үйлөнүптүр — Apparently he got married (someone told you)
  • Sudden realization: Уктап калыптырмын — Turns out I fell asleep (didn't even notice)
  • Surprise: Сен чоңоюптурсуң! — Look how you've grown! (who knew!)

When NOT to use:

  • You witnessed the action yourself → use the definite past (-ды/-ти)
  • Life experience or result → use the indefinite past (-ган/-кан)

🧮 The Formula

Formula: Stem + -(ы)птыр-(и)птир-(у)птур-(ү)птүр + personal ending

Step 1: Add the suffix

The vowel choice follows vowel harmony.

If the stem ends in a consonant:

Vowel groupSuffixExample
а, я, ы-(ы)птырбар → барыптыр
э, е, и-(и)птиркел → келиптир
о, ё, у, ю-(у)птурбол → болуптур
ө, ү-(ү)птүркөр → көрүптүр

If the stem ends in a vowel — no linking vowel is needed:

  • башта → баштаптыр (apparently started)
  • оку → окуптур (apparently was studying)

⚠️ Important: Consonant voicing! If the stem ends in a voiceless п or к, they become voiced before the suffix vowel:

  • тап → табыптыр (п → б)
  • ук → угуптур (к → г)

Step 2: Personal endings

This tense uses the standard personal endings. No ending is added for «ал».

⚠️ Note: The «алар» form is built through the cooperative voice: stem + -ышыптыр-ишиптир-ушуптур-үшүптүр. See cooperative voice for more detail.

Negative form

Negation is built with the negative affix -ба-бе-бо-бө or -па-пе-по-пө (after voiceless consonants), followed by the shortened suffix -птыр.

Formula: Stem + -ба-па + птыр + personal ending

Question form

The question suffix -бы-би-бу-бү is added to the full form.

Formula: Full form + -бы-би-бу-бү

сиздербарыптырсыздарбыdid you (formal plural) really go?

💡 For negative questions, the suffix is added to the negative form: «Ал барбаптырбы?» — He really didn't go?

⚠️ Key distinctions: -ДЫ vs -ГАН vs -ЫПТЫР

To stop confusing these once and for all, let's look at one situation — your friend Азамат left for Osh — through the lens of each tense:

TenseWhat you sayWhat it means
Definite (-ды)Азамат Ошко кетти.I saw him leave. This is a 100% firsthand fact.
Indefinite (-ган)Азамат Ошко кеткен.He left (I may not have seen it), and he is there now. That's his current status.
Evidential (-ыптыр)Азамат Ошко кетиптир.I was told (or just found out) that he left. Apparently!
