In English we use a separate word "if": "If it rains, I'll stay home." In Kyrgyz, no separate word is needed for this — the condition is built right into the verb with the suffix -са.
🔄 Comparison: English "if" is a separate word placed before the verb. The Kyrgyz conditional is a suffix inside the verb. This is a fundamental feature of agglutinative languages.
🧠 Logic
The conditional mood (Шарт ыңгай) is needed when we talk about hypothetical situations: what will happen if something occurs. An enormous number of constructions are built on the -са form:
| Meaning | Construction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Simple condition | -са | Жамгыр жааса, үйдө калам |
| Permission | -са болобу? | Кирсем болобу? |
| Concession | -са да | Чарчасам да, иштейм |
| Wish/regret | -са экен | Келсе экен |
This is one of the most productive forms in Kyrgyz — once you learn it, you unlock dozens of expressions.
🧮 Formula
Formula: Stem + -са-се-со-сө + personal ending
The suffix is selected by vowel harmony:
| Vowel group | Suffix | Example |
|---|---|---|
| а, я, ы | -са | бар → барсам |
| э, е, и | -се | кел → келсем |
| о, ё | -со | бол → болсом |
| у, ю | -со | ук → уксом |
| ө, ү | -сө | көр → көрсөм |
💡 Useful tip: The personal endings in the conditional mood are the same as in the past definite tense! You don't need to learn anything new.

Full conjugation table
| Person | Ending | бар- | кел- | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| мен | -м | барсам | келсем | if I go |
| сен | -ң | барсаң | келсең | if you go |
| сиз | -ңыз/-ңиз/-ңуз/-ңүз | барсаңыз | келсеңиз | if you go (formal) |
| ал | ∅ | барса | келсе | if he/she goes |
| биз | -к | барсак | келсек | if we go |
| силер | -ңар/-ңер/-ңор/-ңөр | барсаңар | келсеңер | if you (guys) go |
| сиздер | -ңыздар/-ңиздер/... | барсаңыздар | келсеңиздер | if you go (formal pl.) |
| алар | -(ы)шса/-(и)шсе/-(у)шсо/-(ү)шсө | барышса | келишсе | if they go |
Note: «Ал» has no personal ending — the -са suffix itself marks the person. «Алар» always uses the cooperative voice: after consonants -ыш-иш-уш-үш, after vowels {-ш}: бар → барышса, иште → иштешсе.
Negative form
The negative suffix -ба-бе-бо-бө or -па-пе-по-пө is placed before the conditional suffix (following the rules of sound assimilation):
Formula: Stem + -ба-па + -са + personal ending
| Affirmative | Negative | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| барсам | барбасам | if I don't go |
| келсең | келбесең | if you don't come |
| уксак | укпасак | if we don't hear |
| көрсө | көрбөсө | if he/she doesn't see |
⚠️ Important notes
1. The word «эгер» is optional
Many beginners put the word «эгер» at the start but forget the -са suffix on the verb:
❌ Wrong: Эгер мен барам — no conditional form
✅ Correct: Мен барсам / Эгер мен барсам
💡 Tip: Эгер is optional — it simply reinforces the condition (like "well, if..."). But the suffix -са is required!
2. Constructions based on -са
The -са form is the foundation for many expressions:
Permission: -са болобу?
- Кирсем болобу? — May I come in?
- Суроо берсем болобу? — May I ask a question?
👉 More detail: May / May not
Concession: -са да
- Жамгыр жааса да, мен барам — Even if it rains, I'll go
- Билбесе да, сүйлөй берет — Even if he doesn't know, he keeps talking
👉 More detail: Even if (-са да)
Wish/regret: -са экен
- Күн ачык болсо экен — I wish the weather were clear
- Сен келсең жакшы болмок — It would be nice if you came
The "would" construction: -са + -мак
When you need to say "if... then I would...", you combine the conditional with the intention suffix -мак:
- Миллионер болсом, мындай унааны сатып алмакмын — If I were a millionaire, I'd buy a car like that
- Убактым болсо, жардам бермекмин — If I had time, I'd help
👉 More detail: Intention: -мак
