Imagine you walk into a new restaurant and see a sign: "Open from 9:00." The restaurant doesn't open itself — the staff open it — but we don't need to mention them in the sentence.
Or you see a notice: "Apartment for sale." Who is selling it? Doesn't matter. The point is the apartment is for sale.
For situations like these, where the action matters more than who performed it, Kyrgyz uses Туюк мамиле (the passive voice).
💡 English analogy: The exact equivalent is the passive voice: "The door was opened" = «Эшик ачылды».
🧠 The Logic
The passive voice removes the agent from the sentence and puts the object in focus. Use it when:
When to use:
- It's unknown who performed the action: Эшик ачылды — The door was opened (by whom — doesn't matter)
- The result matters, not the doer: Кат жазылды — The letter has been written
- General facts and announcements: Дүкөн саат 9да ачылат — The shop opens at 9
When NOT to use:
- When the agent matters → use a regular active voice verb
- When the subject acts on themselves → use the reflexive voice (-ын/-ин)
🧮 The Formula
To turn a regular verb into a passive one, we embed the letter «л» into the stem.
Rule 1: After vowels — add -л
| Stem | Passive | Example |
|---|---|---|
| башта- (to start) | баштал- | Сабак башталды — The lesson began |
| жаса- (to make) | жасал- | Тамак жасалды — The food was made |
| изилде- (to research) | изилдел- | Маселе изилделди — The issue was studied |
| же- (to eat) | жел- | Тамак желди — The food was eaten |
Rule 2: After consonants — add -ыл-ил-ул-үл
The vowel is chosen according to vowel harmony:
| Vowel group | Suffix | Example |
|---|---|---|
| а, я, ы | -ыл | ач- → ачыл- (to be opened), жаз- → жазыл- (to be written) |
| э, е, и | -ил | чеч- → чечил- (to be resolved), кет- → кетил- (to be left) |
| о, ё, у, ю | -ул | кур- → курул- (to be built), түш- → түшүл- |
| ө, ү | -үл | күй- → күйүл- (to be burned) |
жазылдыжазrootылpassiveдыpast tense→ was written
⚠️ Important: Voicing! A voiceless п voices to б before a vowel: жап → жабыл- (to be closed), тап → табыл- (to be found).
Rule 3: If there's already an «л» before the ending — use -н
When adding -л would create an awkward double «л», we use -ын-ин-ун-үн or -н (after a vowel) instead:
Stem ends in «л»:
| Stem | Passive | Example |
|---|---|---|
| кыл- (to do) | кылын- | Жумуш кылынды — The work was done |
| ал- (to take) | алын- | Салык алынат — Tax is collected |
Stem ends in a vowel, but «л» comes just before it:
| Stem | Passive | Why not -л |
|---|---|---|
| ойло- (to think) | ойлон- | |
| тазала- (to clean) | тазалан- |
⚠️ Note: Don't confuse these! ойло (to think) → ойлон (to be thought about, passive). But ойлон- as a standalone verb means "to think/reflect" — at that point it has become a word in its own right, not a passive form.
⚠️ Note: In all other cases, the suffix -ын signals the reflexive voice (when someone does something to themselves — gets dressed, washes up). Don't confuse the passive -ыл with the reflexive -ын!
💡 Examples
How the passive transforms a sentence
The key trick: we remove the agent and promote the object to subject:
| Voice | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Мен катты жаздым | I wrote the letter |
| Passive | Кат жазылды | The letter was written |
| Active | Жумушчулар үйдү курушту | The workers built the house |
| Passive | Үй курулду | The house was built |
Everyday passive verbs

| башталат | starts | Сабак саат 8де башталат |
| сатылат | is for sale | Үй сатылат — House for sale |
