In English, to say that an action hasn't been done yet but is expected, we add the word "yet" or "still": "I haven't eaten yet", "He still hasn't arrived", "We haven't seen that film yet".
In Kyrgyz, there is a special grammatical form using the word элек. It attaches to the verb to show that a process is in a waiting state.
🧠 The Logic
The main difference between this form and regular negation: it leaves room for hope. You're not just saying "I didn't do it" — you're saying "I haven't done it up to this moment (but I plan to, or it's expected to happen)".
| Form | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| -ган жок (plain negation) | Ал келген жок. | He didn't come. (That's a fact. Full stop.) |
| -а элек (not yet) | Ал келе элек. | He hasn't come yet. (But we're waiting!) |
🧮 The Formula
Pattern: Stem + linking vowel -а-е-о-ө-й + элек + personal ending
бара элекминбарstemаlinking vowelэлек"not yet"минI→ I haven't been there yet
How to choose the vowel? By vowel harmony:
| Condition | Vowel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Consonant (а, я, ы, у, ю) | -а | бар → бара элек |
| Consonant (и, е, э) | -е | кел → келе элек |
| Consonant (о, ё) | -о | кой → коё элек |
| Consonant (ө, ү) | -ө | көр → көрө элек |
| Vowel | -й | оку → окуй элек |
💡 Spelling note: й + о = ё: кой + о = коё элек (not койо элек).
⚠️ Important: Voiceless к and п voice before a vowel: ук → уга элек.
Personal endings — the word элек takes the endings of жак мүчөлөр:
| Pronoun | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Мен | элекмин | бара элекмин |
| Сен | элексиң | бара элексиң |
| Сиз | элексиз | бара элексиз |
| Ал | элек | бара элек |
| Биз | элекпиз | бара элекпиз |
| Силер | элексиңер | бара элексиңер |
| Алар | элек | бара элек |
Question Form
The question particle goes at the very end:
| Form | Translation |

| Коноктор келе элекпи? | Haven't the guests arrived yet? |
| Сен даяр боло элексиңби? | Aren't you ready yet? |
| Тамак быша элекпи? | Is the food not ready yet? |
💡 Examples

⚠️ Important Notes
1. -ган жок vs -а элек
This is the cornerstone of Kyrgyz negation:
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| -ган жок | Fact: he didn't come (and most likely won't) |
| -а элек | Expectation: he hasn't come yet (but he's on his way, we're waiting) |
2. Never use with negation!
The particle элек already carries the meaning "no". Do not add the negative suffix -ба/-бе to the verb!
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Right |
|---|---|
| Мен бара элекмин |
