Until / Instead: -ганча

If you want to say "Wait until sunset," "I ate until I was stuffed," or "Instead of sleeping, go get some work done!" — you only need one suffix: -ганча.

It marks the limit up to which an action continues, or compares two actions against each other.

🧠 Logic

The suffix -ганча has multiple meanings. It has two main uses:

A time limit — marks the boundary up to which an action continues: "Until you come," "Until sunset."
A choice / comparison — means "instead of": compares two actions and picks the better one.

The familiar word көрүшкөнчө (goodbye / until we meet again) is exactly this form! It comes from the verb көрүш- (cooperative voice of көр-) + -көнчө: literally "until we see each other."

🧮 Formula

The suffix attaches directly to the verb root according to vowel harmony:

After vowels and voiced consonants: add voiced -ганча-генче-гончо-гөнчө

көр (to see)	көргөнчө	until he sees

After voiceless consonants (к, п, с, т, ч, ш): add voiceless -канча-кенче-кончо-көнчө

Meaning of limit: "Up until / Until"

The suffix marks a point in time up to which an action continues.

Сен келгенче мен үйдө болом	I'll be at home until you come
Мен айтканча күтө тур	Wait until I say so

Physical limit

Also used to express the limit of one's capacity ("Until full / As far as strength allows"):

Мен тойгончо жедим	I ate until I was full (ate my fill)
Күчүм жеткенче жардам берем	I'll help as long as my strength holds

Meaning of choice: "Instead of..."

The second meaning — comparing two actions: one is better than the other. The logic: "Before doing THIS, better do THAT."

Үйдө бекер отурганча, китеп окубайсыңбы!	Instead of sitting at home doing nothing, why not read a book!
Аны менен урушканча, унчукпай эле кой	Instead of arguing with him, just stay quiet
Такси күткөнчө, жөө барып келели	Instead of waiting for a taxi, let's walk there

⚠️ Important notes

-ганча vs -майынча

These two suffixes are often confused because both can be translated as "until" in English. But the difference between them is significant:

-МАЙЫНЧА (Hard condition / Ultimatum)

Means: "Until this happens, the other action is impossible." This is a strict barrier.

Сен келмейинче, мен кетпейм	Until you come, I won't leave	I refuse to leave without you
Акча төлөмөйүнчө, товарды бербейбиз	Until you pay, we won't hand over the goods	A hard condition

-ГАНЧА (Just a time limit)

Means: "I'll do this until a certain moment." There's no ultimatum here, just a marker on the clock.

Сен келгенче, мен китеп окуп турам	Until you come, I'll be reading	I'm just filling the time until you arrive
