Sit and Do: -ып отур

Prolonged action while sitting

In Kyrgyz there is a quartet of posture auxiliary verbs that add aspectual nuance to actions: жат (to lie), тур (to stand), жүр (to go/walk), and отур (to sit).

The construction -ып отур describes an action performed while sitting, in a calm setting, often with a sense of focus or absorption in the process.

🧠 The Logic

Historically these verbs described the physical position of the body, but today they convey the aspect of an action — how exactly it unfolds:

VerbConstructionNuanceArticle
жат (to lie)-ып жатright nowPresent continuous
тур (to stand)-а турtemporarily, waitTemporary action
жүр (to walk)-ып жүрregularly, in lifeBackground action
отур (to sit)-ып отурsitting, focused(this article)

When we add отур to an action, we emphasize a calm, seated, absorbed-in-the-task atmosphere. It's not just "doing" something — it's "sitting down and doing" it.

The gerund suffix — by vowel harmony:

Calm, unhurried activity

— Чай ичип отуралыбы? — Shall we sit and have some tea? — Баралы! — Let's go!

⚠️ Important Notes

1. Physical vs aspectual meaning

Sometimes отур keeps its literal meaning "to sit":

  • Отуруңуз. — Please sit down (invitation).
  • Отуруп алды. — He sat down.

But in the construction -ып отур the meaning is usually aspectual (busy with something).

2. «Эмне кылып отурасың?»

This is the most common question with this construction — the Kyrgyz equivalent of "What are you up to?"

3. Don't confuse with the imperative

  • Отур! — Sit down! / Stay seated! (command)
  • Окуп отур. — Sit there and read (construction)

4. Comparing the quartet in one situation

Situation: Reading a book
