Compounds with болуу

Verb phrases with болуу: become, turn into

In English, the verb "become" can mean completely different things: "became a doctor" (profession), "it got dark" (change of state), "got better" (improvement).

In Kyrgyz, the verb болуу (to be, to become, to happen) is a true all-rounder. It works both as an independent verb and as an auxiliary in compound constructions.

🧠 The Logic

Болуу has three roles:

RoleMeaningExample
Verbto become / to happenАл дарыгер болду (He became a doctor)
Auxiliarycan / cannotБарса болот (It's okay to go)
In compoundsnuances of "became"Боло берди / болуп калды / болуп кетти

This article covers the third role: compound constructions where болуу combines with other auxiliary verbs.

Since the root is always бол-, only two forms are used:

  • боло (linking vowel form) + бер
  • болуп (gerund) + кал / кет

🧮 The Formula

Construction 1: Боло берди — "it just kept on being that way"

Uses the "continue" pattern: боло + бер.

боло берди
бол
root (to be)
о
linking vowel
бер
auxiliary (to continue)
ди
past tense
it just kept on being that way
KyrgyzTranslation
Ошентип боло берди.And so it continued / That's just how it went.
Иш ушундай боло берет.Things just keep going the same way.
Кыйын боло берди.It keeps getting harder.

💡 Nuance: The process dragged on — the situation keeps developing in the same direction.

Construction 2: Болуп калды — "it turned out that way by accident"

Uses the "accidental" pattern: болуп + кал.

болуп калды
бол
root (to be)
уп
gerund
кал
auxiliary (accidental)
ды
past tense
it turned out that way (unintentionally)
KyrgyzTranslation
Кеч болуп калды.It got late (gradually, without noticing).
Ошондой болуп калды.That's just how it turned out.
Уят болуп калды.It got awkward / became embarrassing.

💡 Nuance: The result was unintentional — you didn't plan it, it just fell into place like that.

Construction 3: Болуп кетти — "it suddenly became"

Uses the pattern with кетүү (to leave): болуп + кет. Adds a sense of suddenness.

KyrgyzTranslation
Караңгы болуп кетти.It suddenly got dark.
Тынч болуп кетти.It suddenly went quiet.
Баары жакшы болуп кетти.Everything suddenly got better.

💡 Nuance: The change happened quickly, suddenly — like a switch flipping.

Negation

Negation goes on the auxiliary verb:

AffirmativeNegativeTranslation
Болуп калдыБолуп калган жокIt never quite happened
Болуп кеттиБолуп кеткен жокIt never came about
Боло бердиБоло берген жокIt just didn't keep going

  • Ал дарыгер болуп кетти — He unexpectedly became a doctor (surprisingly)

2. With adjectives vs nouns

  • With adjectives (quality): Суук болуп кетти — It got cold
  • With nouns (status): Досум болуп калды — He became my friend (that's how it worked out)
