Conjunctions

In English we constantly use conjunctions: "bread and milk", "I came and sat down", "it started raining, so I stayed".

Kyrgyz (байламталар) has its own conjunctions too. But the main thing to know is that they work quite differently from what you're used to. The biggest trap is waiting for you right at the word "and".

🧠 Logic

Turkic languages are built so that the logical connection is woven into the words themselves through suffixes. Conjunctions in Kyrgyz are more of a supporting tool than the backbone of speech.

The better you know Kyrgyz grammar, the less you'll actually need conjunctions:

⚠️ Three faces of "and" (the most common mistake)

Look up "and" in a dictionary and you'll get жана. Beginners happily grab it and drop it in everywhere. But to say "and", you first need to understand what exactly you're connecting.

Connecting nouns → МЕНЕН

The postposition менен translates as "with / together with". In everyday speech it's often used instead of "and" when listing things or people.

Kyrgyz	Translation
Нан менен сүт.	Bread and milk (lit. bread with milk).
Асан менен Үсөн.	Asan and Usen.
Мен сени менен.	Me and you.

⚠️ Important: The pronouns мен and сен are exceptions! With the postposition «менен» they take the accusative case: мени менен, сени менен (not ~~мен менен~~, ~~сен менен~~).

Connecting verbs → The -ЫП suffix

If you want to say "I came and ate", you don't need a separate word. The first verb becomes a gerund using the suffix -ып/-ип/-уп/-үп.

Kyrgyz	Translation
Мен келип, тамак жедим.	I came and ate (lit. "Having come, I ate").
Китепти ачып, окуду.	He opened the book and read it.
Отуруп, сүйлөштүк.	We sat down and talked.

When to use ЖАНА?

The word жана (and, also) is a fully-fledged conjunction. It's more common in written language and when listing complex concepts, but it's perfectly fine in conversation too.

For example, Кыргызстандын экономикасы жана маданияты. — The economy and culture of Kyrgyzstan.

💡 Other conjunctions

БИРОК — "but"

The word бирок is the equivalent of "but".

Kyrgyz	Translation
Мен бардым, бирок ал жок экен.	I went, but he wasn't there.
Бул кымбат, бирок сапаттуу.	It's expensive, but quality.

ЖЕ / ЖЕ БОЛБОСО — "or"

The word же is used for choices. Же болбосо is the fuller version ("or else").

Kyrgyz	Translation
Чай же кофе ичесиңби?	Will you have tea or coffee?
Бүгүн же эртең барам.	I'll go today or tomorrow.
Мага чал, же болбосо мен өзүм барам.	Call me, or else I'll go myself.

АНТКЕНИ / СЕБЕБИ — "because"

Both words mean "because". Анткени is more common in formal writing; себеби is used in conversation.

Kyrgyz	Translation
Мен бүгүн барбайм, анткени ооруп жатам.	I'm not going today, because I'm sick.
Келбедим, себеби убактым жок болчу.	I didn't come, because I had no time.

ОШОНДУКТАН — "so, therefore"

Shows a result or consequence.

Kyrgyz	Translation
Мен ооруп жатам, ошондуктан бүгүн барбайм.	I'm sick, so I'm not going today.
