Essential🔄Aspectual Constructions

Like: мага ...-ган жагат

Expressing preference

In English, you are the main character: I like. In Russian and Kyrgyz, the logic is different: the main character is the thing or action that gives you pleasure, and you are just the receiver.

In Kyrgyz, the verb жагуу (to please / to be pleasing) is used for this.

🧠 The Logic

We say: "To someone + something + is pleasing." To say "to me", we take the pronoun «мен» and put it in the dative case (Барыш жөндөмө).

Basic forms:

PronounDative case
Мен (I)Мага
Сен (you)Сага
Сиз (you, formal)Сизге
Ал (he/she)Ага
Биз (we)Бизге
Силер (you all)Силерге
Алар (they)Аларга

🧮 The Formula

Liking a thing or person

Who (Мага/Сага) + noun + жагат

KyrgyzTranslation
Мага бул китеп жагат.I like this book.
Ага Бишкек жагат.He likes Bishkek.
Мага сен жагасың.I like you.

💡 Tip: In that last example, the verb жак got the personal ending -сың because the main character of the sentence is "you"!

Liking an activity (I like reading)

The action needs to be turned into a verbal noun using the suffixes -уу-үү-оо-өө:

Who + verb with -уу-үү-оо-өө + жагат

KyrgyzTranslation
Мага китеп окуу жагат.I like reading books.
Сизге ырдоо жагат.You like singing.
Ага музыка угуу жагат.He likes listening to music.
