In English, negation is a separate word placed before the verb: "I don't go", "I don't know", "I don't want". In Kyrgyz, things work differently: negation is built directly into the verb as a suffix and becomes an inseparable part of it.
This is one of the key features of agglutinative languages: instead of helper words, "building blocks" are attached to the root. Think of LEGO — each brick (root, negation, tense, person) snaps together in a fixed order.
Kyrgyz has two ways to negate: the suffix -ба/-па for simple tenses, and the words жок/эмес for complex constructions. Let's look at both.
🧠 Logic
The negative suffix -ба (or -па after voiceless consonants) is placed right after the verb root, before all other suffixes:
ROOT + БА/ПА + tense + person
The choice of suffix variant depends on two factors:
- The vowel (а/е/о/ө) is determined by vowel harmony
- The consonant (б or п) is determined by sound assimilation — after voiceless consonants, use «п»
🧮 Formula: Suffix -БА / -ПА
After vowels and voiced consonants: -ба-бе-бо-бө
| Verb | Negative stem | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Бар- (to go) | Барба- | Барба! (Don't go!) |
| Оку- (to read) | Окуба- | Окуба! (Don't read!) |
| Иште- (to work) | Иштебе- | Иштебе! (Don't work!) |
| Көр- (to see) | Көрбө- | Көрбө! (Don't look!) |
After voiceless consonants: -па-пе-по-пө
| Verb | Negative stem | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Айт- (to say) | Айтпа- | Айтпа! (Don't say!) |
| Ич- (to drink) | Ичпе- | Ичпе! (Don't drink!) |
| Күт- (to wait) | Күтпө- | Күтпө! (Don't wait!) |
| Бас- (to step) | Баспа- | Баспа! (Don't step!) |
💡 Tip: If the root ends in a voiceless sound (к, п, с, т, ш, ч), use -па-. In all other cases — -ба-.
💡 Tip: The negative stem on its own is already a command (imperative mood) for the «Сен» (you/singular) form!
🧮 Negation in simple tenses
The negative suffix is the "building block" that slots between the root and the tense ending.
Past definite tense (-ды / -ди)
You simply add the past tense marker to the negative stem:
| Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|
| Мен жаздым (I wrote) | Мен жазбадым (I didn't write) |
| Сен жаздың (You wrote) | Сен жазбадың (You didn't write) |
| Ал келди (He came) | Ал келбеди (He didn't come) |
Present-future tense (-а / -й)
The present tense suffix is a vowel (-а/-е) or the letter -й. Since our negative suffix (-ба) already ends in a vowel, we simply attach the consonant -й to it.
| Verb | Breakdown | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Бил- (to know) | бил + бе + й + м | Билбейм (I don't know) |
| Бар- (to go) | бар + ба + й + т | Барбайт (He won't go) |
| Иште- (to work) | иште + бе + й + биз | Иштебейбиз (We don't work) |
| Ич- (to drink) | ич + пе + й + т | Ичпейт (He doesn't drink) |

Full conjugation table (verb «бар-» — to go):
| Person | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| Мен | Барам | Барбайм |
| Сен | Барасың | Барбайсың |
| Сиз | Барасыз | Барбайсыз |
| Ал | Барат | Барбайт |
| Биз | Барабыз | Барбайбыз |
| Силер | Барасыңар | Барбайсыңар |
| Сиздер | Барасыздар | Барбайсыздар |
| Алар | Барышат | Барышпайт |
⚠️ Note: The «алар» (they) form is special — the suffix -ыш- is used before the negation: барышпайт, келишпейт.
Question form
A question in the negative form is made by adding the particle -бы/-пы:
| Statement | Question |
|---|---|
| Барбайсың (You're not going) | Барбайсыңбы? (You're not going?) |
| Келбеди (He didn't come) | Келбедиби? (Didn't he come?) |
| Билбейсиз (You don't know) | Билбейсизби? (Don't you know?) |
⚠️ Negation in participles and verbal adverbs
Verbs can answer the questions "what kind?" or "how?". Negation works here too:
Participles (What kind? -ган / -ген)
We add the suffix -ган to the negative stem. Note: after -ба/-па it's always -ган (not -кан), because the negative suffix ends in a vowel.
| Verb | Negative participle | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Оку- | Окубаган китеп | An unread book |
| Иште- | Иштебеген адам | A non-working person |
| Бүт- | Бүтпөгөн иш | An unfinished task |
Verbal adverbs (gerunds) (How? -ып / -ип)
In the affirmative form the verbal adverb suffix is -ып (барып — having gone). In the negative form -ба is added to the stem, followed by connective -й: бар + ба + й = барбай.
Full paradigm: -бай-бей-бой-бөй / -пай-пей-пой-пөй
| Affirmative | Negative | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Барып | Барбай | Without going |
| Иштеп | Иштебей | Without working |
| Айтып | Айтпай | Without saying |
| Көрүп | Көрбөй | Without seeing |
Example: Ал эч нерсе айтпай кетип калды. — He left without saying a word.
⚠️ Negation with ЖОК and ЭМЕС
When we move to complex tenses and constructions, instead of the suffix -ба, standalone negation words are used: жок and эмес. Personal endings ("I", "you", "we") are then attached to these words.
⚠️ Note: The difference between жок and эмес is subtle. Жок — factual absence of action ("it didn't happen"), эмес — semantic negation ("that's not the case"). More detail in the article Жок vs Эмес.
Past indefinite tense (-ган)
Both words — жок and эмес — can be used here.
| Phrase | Translation | Nuance |

| Мен Бишкекке барган жокмун. | I haven't been to Bishkek. | Simply didn't go (this time) |
| Мен Бишкекке барган эмесмин. | I haven't been to Bishkek. | Never been / essentially haven't gone |
| Ал тамак жеген жок. | He didn't eat. | — |
Past habitual tense (-чу)

| Биз ал жерге барчу эмеспиз. | We didn't used to go there. |
Intention (-мак)
Used to express plans, intentions and arrangements. Negated only with ЭМЕС.

| Мен бүгүн жумушка бармак эмесмин. | I wasn't planning to go to work today. |
